turkey Hopes to entice Foreign Students with Health care coverage
Eager to lure more international students to its colleges and universities, the Turkish government has proposed legislation that would provide health care coverage to foreign students and their dependents. The bill calls for insurance coverage to be made available to international students and their dependents at a rate of 91 Turkish lira (about $57) per month. There are approximately 17,000 international students from 127 countries currently studying in Turkey, but the number of foreign students there has declined in recent years. Yusuf Ziya Özcan, the president of Turkey’s Board of Higher Education, told English-language newspaper Today’s Zaman that plans are underway to double the number of foreign students studying at Turkish universities.

Supporting International Students Whose Home Countries Are in Crisis
IN LIGHT OF RECENT PROTESTS AND UNREST
in the Middle East and North Africa and the tragic aftermath of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, members of the Crisis Management Task Force of NAFSA’s Knowledge Community for International Student and Scholar Services developed a resource for international educators dealing with issues related to assisting students and scholars in the United States whose home country is affected by a natural disaster or crisis. The resource features a list of suggested action items designed to help international students and scholars. It is available at www.nafsa.org/crisisresponse.

hina is setting its sights on serving as an international education hub, planning to nearly double its current international student population of approximately 265,000, a Chinese education ministry official said recently. According to an article in the International Business Times, Deputy Director general Shen Yang, , from the Ministry of Education’s Department of International Cooperation and Exchange, says that China is planning to boost country-to-country student exchange; engage in more cooperation with the European Union, ASEAN (The Association of Southeast Asian Nations), and other regional entities; and develop more credit transfer and mutual degree recognition agreements. China already is working with the United States on the 100,000 Strong Initiative, which would boost the number of U.S. students studying in China to 100,000 over the next four years. U.S. President barack Obama announced the “100,000 Strong” initiative in November 2009 and Secretary of State hillary Clinton officially launched the initiative in May 2010 in beijing.
