ROI: Education Abroad Is a Very Rewarding Investment
THE “BEFORE AND AFTER” EFFECT of education abroad is something funders can easily see and appreciate. “All scholarships are wonderful,” Anne M. Alexander, director of international programs at the University of Wyoming says. “But when donors invest in study abroad they can see the change in students that comes about right away: that shift in perspective that can take years in the natural course of maturation can take place in six months or even three months when students study abroad. Business people especially are interested in investing in study abroad, because they like high return. And they like tangible stuff they can see.” Alexander makes sure that the board of advisers for UW international programs as well as donors to study abroad scholarships are given opportunities to meet the students who are benefitting from the awards, ideally both before and after their time abroad. “They can see there has been an immediate effect, and it’s such a big effect,” she says. “They like that!” Michelle “Mitch” Kirsch, director of administrative operations at Penn State’s Schreyer Honors College, agrees. “When donors have a chance to hear from the students who have benefitted from their gifts, and hear them talk about that transformative experience, that’s very powerful,” she says. “There’s nothing anybody else could do any better to convince someone that what they gave was a good investment in the student’s education.” And while it may not be the main thing donors are looking for, certainly legacy is another benefit. Elizabeth Libby, associate vice president of communications and marketing at Lake Forest, says, “I just talked to two of the students in our first group of returning students: one from Costa Rica, and one from Paris. They came back full of enthusiasm, and singing the praises of [scholarship sponsor] Grace Groner!”

There has been progress in raising awareness and diversifying study abroad at Penn State since the first Schreyer gift in 1997. “In the last 10 to 15 years, we have increased overall participation in study abroad at Penn State and we’ve made some progress in diversifying students’ destinations beyond Western Europe, Australia, and New Zealand,” explains Stoller. Schreyer Honors College encourages all of its students to go abroad. “We would expect that all Schreyer Scholars study abroad, whether it is through a Schreyer Honors College-specific program or a general Penn State program (including exchanges or third-party programs),” says Stoller. Today, nearly 50 percent of Schreyer graduates have studied abroad. “The availability of special scholarship support for study abroad has encouraged Schreyer Scholars to think about it from the outset,” says Stoller. “We want to take away one common reason for putting aside the idea of study abroad: that it’s unaffordable.” And while Schreyer is just one small college within a large university, “plenty has changed for education abroad at Penn State in the 13 years since the gift. But as a small unit, we don’t claim credit for much of it. We do think our example has encouraged other academ-

ic colleges to think about scholarship support for education abroad, and about ‘embedded programs,’ which Schreyer pioneered.’” More students studying abroad often mean different ways of managing work. And this is no exception for Penn State. “Over the years, the growth of interest in study abroad at Penn State and among Schreyer Scholars, we have learned to distribute advising responsibilities more efficiently between the Schreyer Honors College, the university’s education abroad office, and the designated education abroad advisers in the academic colleges,” says Stoller. “Much of my work with students is to direct them to the best resources on campus for making decisions about study abroad. The rise of short-term, faculty-led programs (we call those ‘embedded programs’) has its own challenges with regard to planning, purchasing, and risk management, and we have developed effective systems for handling that growth.” William Schreyer, a Penn State alumnus, often remarked that after spending a lifetime on Wall Street, the Schreyer Honors College was the best investment he had ever made. “There’s no point in going through life just to make a buck,” he said at the time of announcing his gift. “You’ve got to accomplish something, build something, grow something…And you certainly shouldn’t wait until you die…You want to see the results.”
