“Grace Groner’s gift has increased both awareness of and interest in study abroad,” says Janet Miller, assistant dean of faculty for offcampus programs. “Many small colleges, like our own, have had to tighten their belts in the precarious economy of the past few years, and many families have had no extra funds to spend on anything beyond campus enrollment. The Groner scholarships have made it possible for Lake Forest to maintain its offerings for study abroad, and for students who otherwise may not have been able to afford such an experience to pursue that goal.” At Lake Forest College, Janet Miller works in what is referred to as a “one-person” office. She has occasional help from an assistant a few hours week as well as a student worker a few hours a week to assist with clerical duties, but for the most part, she’s managing the education abroad office as well as additional work that comes from more interest in studying abroad since the Groner gift. Still, she’s found solutions to help manage the workload. “Streamlining our system has proven to be helpful,” says Miller. “While I still require personal interviews with all students who apply for off-campus study, they can now download most of the necessary forms from our online site. Our process is now divided into two stages: first, eligibility, and second, program selection. This helps by allowing only those students who meet all the requirements to continue with their application; and it eliminates the frustration students might feel after going through the entire process only to learn, too late, that they are actually not eligible to

leave campus. It also gives them time to plan for reapplication the following year if they so desire. Still, between processing applications, preparing students to leave, meeting with students who have returned, keeping track of students who are away, responding to their e-mail inquiries, dealing with the occasional crisis, and other faculty duties, my cup runneth over.” Rich Bartolozzi has two interns who work in his office to help promote the Groner scholarships. “They’ve established a newsletter, they’ve been very helpful, we’ve done three Groner-specific events for Groner students, so they’ve been very helpful in coordinating and hosting those events,” says Bartolozzi. “They’ve been very helpful in helping us to implement the program.” “It’s a wonderful thing Grace Groner did for our students,” says Bartolozzi. “The opportunities she’s afforded them will certainly give them a leg up in what is now a more global economy. We’re just extremely grateful, and we look forward to growing the program.” ie
