N 2008 THE COLLINS ENGLISH DICTIONARY ADDED “FACEBOOK” as both a noun and a verb. As a verb, Facebook implies action—from the international higher education field, its institutions, and recruitment professionals.
“At this stage in the game, if you don’t have a social media presence, you better hurry up because that’s where the game is,” says MacKenzie Hizon, director of international outreach at Green River Community College in Washington state. As Mandy Hansen, director of international admissions and recruitment at Northern Arizona University (NAU) in Flagstaff, explains it, the rules of the international recruitment game have changed as well. “The way that universities recruit students has changed dramatically. Even within the past two years, we have implemented changes to adjust to the technology that students are using,” she says. Furthermore, social media itself is constantly evolving. According to Hizon, “You are working on a moving platform. It’s really different than having a static Web site.” Broadly defined, social media refers to a number of social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Foursquare, and Myspace, as well as video sharing sites like Youtube. It can also include blogging platforms such as Wordpress, Typepad, and Blogspot, which can stand on their own or be integrated into an institutional Web site. In addition, social media is often linked to Web-based communication platforms like Skype (voice and video calls), MSN messenger, and a number of other chat programs. What they have in common is that they are user friendly, free to use, and most importantly, utilized by students. “This generation of students eats, lives, breathes, and sleeps social media. If we want to communicate with them, get them to our Web sites, and have them apply, we need to pick up the pace,” says Jessica Winters, coordinator of international marketing and communications at the University of Groningen in the Netherlands. In 2010 the International Student Barometer added social media as a possible answer to “Which of the following helped your decision to chose this institution?” in its survey of international students who had recently started their studies. Four percent of students listed social media (right behind “staff at fair” and “staff at a presentation” at 5 percent each) as a factor in deciding which institution to attend. The most important factors in decisionmaking were friends at 45 percent and the institution Web site at 39 percent. Facebook is the most prominent, though far from the only, social networking site out there. The Anderson Analytics 2009–2010 GenX2Z American College Student Survey reported that not only was Facebook the most popular social networking site among students age 18–25, it also overtook Google as the number one Web site overall. Facebook’s power is confirmed by other sources. According to Socialbakers.com, one of the largest Facebook statistics portals in the world, the site grew to 585 million users in 2010, almost 188 million of which are between 18 and 34. The top countries in absolute numbers are the United States, Indonesia, and the United Kingdom followed by Turkey, France, the Philippines, Mexico, Italy, India, and Canada. Some of the biggest markets, however, have their own local equivalent, such as Orkut in Brazil, Mixi in Japan, and vKontakte in Russia. Facebook is also blocked in the biggest market of all—China, but there is a local outlet known as RenRen.
