Social Media can Serve Many purposes
The University of Groningen Facebook page (www.facebook.com/universityofgroningen) is currently “liked” by 5,556 users, while the prospective international student page (http://www.facebook.com/prospectivestudentsuniversityofgroningen) has 1519 users who “like it.” On March 6, a Spanish student posted a question about whether or not classes were in English or Dutch, and less than 45 minutes later, the university had responded that instruction was in English. There were also posts from a current student wanting to borrow an acoustic guitar, as well as several advertisements for rooms to let. She adds that Facebook has also provided insight into her own organization. For example, student posts on Facebook alerted them when an online admissions system was down right before a major deadline. Winters says the nature of the posts fluctuates: “Because the semester just

started, it’s sort of like eBay on there right now, with students advertising bikes and rooms. As soon as it gets closer to the application deadline, that’s when we start to put in a lot of time.” Facebook is thus not always limited to potential recruits. At St. Thomas, Gregor has found that most of their current Face-

book users are in some way affiliated with the university, but “we still want to keep producing content because if you are a student and you click like on a FB post, your friends will take that with a greater weight. So it’s not straight recruitment, but it’s stronger that it is coming from their friend rather than directly from the university.” Mississippi State University uses Facebook to connect current and prospective students in target countries. Lokesh Shivakumaraiah, coordinator of international student recruitment, says he invites current students to answer questions from recruits in their home countries, creating a “strong bonding between current and prospective students” in the process. Hizon adds that in some countries like China, this becomes especially valuable as “personal recommendations are held in very high regard” as students tend to differentiate between “advertisers and someone you know.” Winters and Hansen both say that social media is most effective in reaching students who have already applied. Winters uses social media for “expectation management,” while Hansen adds “it is a great tool for students that are further along in the ‘admissions funnel’.... It is important for international enrollment managers to develop ways to engage students after their admission to help prevent melt and keep them not only interested but prepared for their campus arrival.” NAU, for instance, draws on a Web platform the university utilizes for distance learning programs to offer interactive information sessions and admitted student information sessions. Green River uses Skype for advising incoming students, as well as keeping in touch with other staff members who are often on the road for fairs. For her part, however, Hizon stresses that the solution you use should depend on your target market. “Facebook won’t hurt, but you are trying to engage students in their home countries. Look at which countries you want to recruit from, identify the platforms within the countries, and use your current resources, such as students on campus,” she explains. An example of one of the biggest markets where localization is not only smart
