and sensitive issue surrounds creation of autonomous branch campuses. The head of the Department of Higher and Professional Education at the National University of educational Planning and Administration, Sudhanshu Bhusan, is quoted as saying: “…the provision of programs by private providers in collaboration with foreign universities is far less prevalent in India than internationalization trends elsewhere in the world would indicate.” There is concern that top tier U.S. universities will not find it easy to surmount the regulatory hurdles and lack of recognition of the qualifications offered by foreign providers. I would call attention to the excellent chapter authored by Darla Deardorff who is executive director of the Association of International Education Administrators, and her Indian coauthors dealing with the development of appropriate intercultural competencies in student exchanges of U.S. and Indian students [for a fuller discussion of this theme across cultures, see the volume edited by Deardorff, The SAGE Handbook of Intercultural Competence, SAGE Publications, 2009]. There is a highly nuanced and detailed exploration of cultural factors which impact the learning outcomes for both American and Indian students which are certainly critical to the successful outcomes of any form of interuniversity collaboration or partnership in India. A concluding essay by P.J. Lavakare, member of the Board of Management of Symbiosis International University, provides a retrospective overview of Indo-U.S. higher education relations since Indian independence in 1947. He believes that the creation, in 2009, of a Joint Working Group in education, by the private education sector and the corporate sector is a portent of transformational change in relations between the United States and India in the arena of higher education. I came away from reading this book believing we may be on the cusp of measurably expanding opportunities for greater numbers of U.S. students to study in India leading to a more balanced flow of students and scholars between the two nations in years to come. Coca-Cola Supports Study in China for U.S. Students
The Coca-Cola Foundation recently awarded $1 million in grants to six U.S. higher education institutions to enable more than 160 students to study abroad in China under the U.S. State Department’s 100,000 Strong Initiative. The grant recipients are Columbia University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Michigan State University, Morehouse College, University of California-Los Angeles, and University of Texas-Austin. Here’s how the grant money is targeted: n■ Columbia University ($150,000): 10 students will participate in a 10-week business and internship program, and 10 students will attend a nine-week intensive language immersion program. n■ Georgia Institute of Technology ($200,000): five students will attend a one-year deep immersion program, five students will participate in a semester-long immersion study, and 20 students will attend summer programs. n■ Michigan State University ($200,000): 30 students will participate in programs focused on Chinese language, business, and culture.
