students of all ages in bookstores and libraries gathering their books for their upcoming classes. Sometimes it is easy to forget that not all of us are so lucky. In many places, looking forward to the books for classes is a far-off dream. Illiteracy is a deterrent to a promising future in parts of the developing world. At Pondside Primary School in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica, there is a sign that echoes Mark Twain’s words that encourage the value of reading. This issue’s cover story, “Building a Literate World,” shows how faculty and students from the United States and elsewhere recognize the need to help increase literacy and improve the educational futures of children who want to feel the excitement we feel at the beginning of a new school year— that renewed sense of wonder about what we will discover from the texts we read, how it will change us, and what we interpret from what we read that helps us to write our own stories to share with others.

The legacy of the Peace Corps, which John F. Kennedy started 50 years ago, has greatly influenced the field of international education. Many international educators trace their roots in the field to an early study abroad experience, a volunteer experience in the Peace Corps— or both. In recognition of the Peace Corps 50-year anniversary, this issue includes profiles of several returned Peace Corps volunteers who have dedicated their careers to international education. Together, the Peace Corps and international educators work in harmony to spread the word that we—all of us, no matter what nation we come from or language we speak—are citizens of the world. IE
