signments together and share answers) are not considered wrong. When writing research papers, for example, international students sometimes copy, verbatim, passages from articles—without giving proper citation, explains Demko. “International students often have a different perception or complete lack of knowledge as to when it is appropriate to use another’s thoughts or words, and how to give proper credit,” says Demko, noting that she collaborates with Westminster’s dean of students to mentor and teach students who have violated the college’s academic honesty policy. “The majority of them need to be taught about academic honesty policies in the U.S. …It often seems to be a problem of ignorance of the importance of citing your sources, and rarely seems to be outright cheating.”

Orientations and Special courses
Most colleges and universities offer orientation programs for new international students arriving on campus—with sessions lasting anywhere from one day to an entire week. Since Sara Thurston-González assumed her post as director of international student and scholar services at Kansas State University four years ago, she has used feedback from student evaluations to enhance the university’s week-long orientation and make it feel more relevant for students. An orientation session on adjusting to academic life in the United States, for example, includes presentations from the assistant dean of Kansas State’s College of Engineering and an academic adviser from the School of Business—representing two of the university’s most popular programs for undergraduate international students. They cover topics such as how to interact

with professors, using career services, and the importance of the course syllabus. “It’s the panelists that make this session so relevant for our students,” explains Thurston-González, who also teaches one section of a first-year seminar on “K-State Culture” comprising half internationals and half U.S. students. “The students react well to the information, and most stay after and ask questions of the presenters. You can always tell by the quality of their questions that the students are enjoying the presentation and that they’re very engaged.” At Arizona Western College, a community college in Yuma, Arizona, a one-credit orientation course for all new international students soon will be expanded, says Ken Kuntzelman, director of the international students program. The course, which has been held during the week prior to the first day of fall semester, covers many of the typical components of orientation programs at other colleges, along with writing assignments that prompt students to analyze their own cultures and identities. But after

discussions with his colleagues at other community colleges, Kuntzelman has plans to extend the course throughout the semester to cover issues or concerns that come up once students have had time to experience U.S. classroom and culture. “International students cannot possibly take in all the information they need in one day or one week, so we are looking at having class sessions later and throughout the semester to provide information about topics that become more relevant later in their course of study [such as employment, taxes, travel to Mexico, and future transfer],” explains Kuntzelman. “These later sessions will give them a chance to bring up their own issues without having to make individual advising appointments.” Arizona Western’s international students program has a strong collaborative relationship with the college’s Honors Program as well, Kuntzelman adds. Several years ago, he developed and co-taught an Honors Colloquium on social change aimed at facilitating learning opportunities between U.S. and international students. While that course is now taught by other faculty members, Kuntzelman currently is collaborating with the school’s new Honors Program director—who’s a leading environmental science scholar—to create programs and courses that foster leadership development while teaching students about issues such as sustainability, climate change, and social action. A “fortuitous accident” several years ago transformed Harriet Bloom-Wilson’s semester-long, three-credit course, Introduction to U.S. Culture, for new international students at Northwest College—a residential community college in Powell, Wyoming. A faculty member and director of international academic programs at Northwest,
