Cultural Self-Reflection Tool for Teachers
NAFSA HAS DEVELOPED a new self-assessment tool to help teacher educators figure out where they stand with regard to cultural and global competence and awareness. “My Cultural Awareness Profile,” or MyCAP, is a self-reflection instrument designed to help teacher educators prepare culturally and globally aware teachers. Featuring 40 survey and short essay questions intended to begin the process of self-reflection and dialogue, MyCAP provides an opportunity for preservice teachers to reflect on their current knowledge, beliefs, and understandings across the following four dimensions of cultural awareness: n■ Exploring the Global World (Global Perspective); n■ Learning About Different Cultures (Cultural Understandings); n■ Knowing Ourselves as Cultural (Perspective Consciousness); and Across Cultural Differences (Intercultural Communication). The tool can be used in a number of ways: n■ As a formative assessment tool when deciding how to best sequence instruction relative to preservice teachers’ receptivity; n■ Prior to a course of study, across a program of study, or with individual students; n■ Readministered at intervals within a program of study to assess student growth; or n■ As a cumulative assessment from a program of study, with an eye to providing students with guidance on how to continue their intercultural growth within their professional lives. The MyCAP self-reflection tool is online at www.nafsa.org/mycap.

that most Indian graduates in the United States are interested in returning to India, a finding that may be good news for Indian universities, which currently suffer from a shortage of qualified faculty. The survey of nearly 1,000 Indian students pursuing or finished with graduate study in the United States finds that just 8 percent of respondents said they strongly prefer to stay in the United States. The rest indicated that they were either planning to return to India after some work experience abroad, or were undecided. “The results are surprising and encouraging for Indian universities,” said David Finegold, one of the study’s authors and dean of the Rutgers’ School of Management and Labor Relations. “We expected that more students would lean heavily toward remaining in the U.S. But our results suggest many young academics would be interested in pursuing a faculty career in India, if policymakers can address some of the key issues facing the Indian higher education system.” The report based on the study, titled Will They Return?, was produced by researchers at Rutgers University, Pennsylvania State University, and the Tata institute of Social Sciences.
