THE SIXTH ANNUAL RON MOFFATT SEMINAR ON INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION, PEACE, JUSTICE AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF GLOBAL CIVIL SOCIETY
WHEN March 18-20, 2012 (preceeding the Eighth Annual Forum on Education Abroad Conference “Tracing the Experience: From Inquiry to Integration” Denver, CO March 21-23, 2012) WHERE Denver, Colorado The Ron Moffatt Seminars on International Education were created by BCA to carry forward the work of the late Ron Moffatt, the former NAFSA President (2007), who was a key figure in trying to develop a stronger focus on peace and justice concerns within the international education community and NAFSA. In June 2007, BCA launched the first seminar, which Ron helped to organize, and which was held in the small village of Ballyvaughan in the west of Ireland. Ron’s spirit continues to inform the seminars which are a visible attempt to institutionalize his concerns within the international education community.

FFERS OF ADMISSIOn to prospective international students from U.S. graduate schools increased 11 percent from 2010 to 2011, representing the sixth consecutive year of growth and the largest increase since 2006, according to the Council of Graduate Schools (CGS). The growth was driven by a 23 percent increase in admission offers to students from China, CGS reports in 2011 CGS International Graduate Admissions Survey, Phase II: Final Applications and Initial Offers of Admission. The report notes that “the growth in the participation of Chinese students in U.S. graduate education has outpaced the overall increase in international graduate enrollment over the past five years,

meaning that Chinese students comprise a larger share of all international students today than they did in 2006.” Increases were also seen in offers of admission to prospective graduate students from the Middle East and Turkey (16 percent) and India (8 percent). The largest increases in admissions offers by field of study were in business (16 percent) and physical and earth sciences (15 percent). Admission offers increased in the four major regions of the United States in 2011, according to the report, rising most in the West (up 13 percent), followed by the South (11 percent), the Midwest (11 percent), and the northeast (10 percent).
