Book Notes

he editor of this important textbook, Darla K. Deardorff, is executive director of the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA), based at Duke University. She has been conducting research, writing, and speaking about the complex meaning of the term, “intercultural competence,” for many years. In an article for International Educator, in spring 2004, titled, “Internationalization: In Search of Intercultural Competence,” she addressed the issue of just how U.S. campuses, beginning to pay attention to the need to become more internationalized, needed to address how their efforts lead to the “development of interculturally competent students.” She wrote:
So, while the purpose of having an internationalized campus is obvious enough that funds are being directed accordingly, it is unclear how these institutions know, or even if they can know, that they are graduating interculturally competent students and what it means to be interculturally competent.

internationalization, offers an important international perspective (with 29 chapters written by 45 Western and non-Western authors) on understanding the meaning of the term intercultural competence and its practical application in various occupations and fields of work. Deardorff states this volume is “the first comprehensive

This remains an important focus within the education abroad community and, of course, is consequential for campus administrators and faculty. At a time when every aspect of academic life faces renewed examination and strained budgets—whether at the federal or state level—the assumptions supporting the long-held inherent value of international education face fresh scrutiny. This textbook, while not explicitly designed to guide campus efforts toward

volume that brings together those voices from a variety of cultures to discuss this complex concept of intercultural competence.” The book is designed, she says, to be used in advanced undergraduate and graduate-level courses in cross-cultural communications and that it also can be of value not only to collegiate personnel but also to business professionals and even public school teachers. The text is divided into three parts: “Conceptualizing Intercultural Competence” (authors discuss the meaning and definitions of the term within the cultural

framework of differing nations and regions: the Arab world, Vietnam, Africa, China, Germany, and Latin America); “Applying Intercultural Competence” (application of concept in practice to such fields as business, teacher education, international education, social work, and engineering); and lastly, “Research and Assessment in Intercultural Competence.” (note the chapter by two well-known international educators, Michael Van de Berg and R. Michael Paige: “Applying Theory and Research: The Evolution of Intercultural Competence in U.S. Study Abroad.”) I also suggest that education abroad professionals—interested in the outcomes of study abroad programs or international internships—would find this volume of much interest. The country-specific discussions are relevant in terms of providing students with a framework for their adaptation to the values and attitudes that influence patterns of communication and styles of interpersonal interaction. Either in predeparture workshops, in-country, or upon return to campus, such analyses are important to enable students to fully grasp the new intercultural skills and competencies they have developed through their international experiences. Making the case for the central theme of this book, Deardorff stresses that “intercultural experience alone is not enough…mere contact is not sufficient to develop intercultural competence…. Building authentic relationships, however, is key in this cultural learning process… we must be intentional about developing learners’ intercultural competence [my emphasis].” There would be little dispute
