Students take an entry test for Khyber Medical college (KMc) held at Karnal Sher Khan Shaheed Stadium on July 24, 2011, in Peshawar, Pakistan.

walked to the Chemistry Hut, an outdoor snack bar, for samosas and conversations about Islam, Christianity, U.S. foreign policy, our families, geology, and whether their PhD students should be required to take the GRE. My most engaging experience may have been serving as one of four panelists reviewing finalists for Fulbright scholarships. We met at the U.S. Educational Foundation, which is in a leafy neighborhood, surrounded by blast walls following the bombings of the Marriott and the Danish embassy nearby. It was disconcerting being chatted up by the guard at the gate while he was passing a mirror under our SUV to check for explosives. We interviewed 16 academics in the humanities and social sciences from across Pakistan. They included a Rhodes Scholar with a PhD from Cambridge who was studying land tenure and development in Punjab; one of his letters of recommendation was from a nobel Laureate. An internationally exhibited visual artist mentioned discussing the cartoons of the Prophet Mohammed with her students. When asked if some of the art she taught was un-Islamic, she sighed and replied, “There are many Islams.” A woman who teaches native American literature remarked that neither Mohawks nor Pashtuns feel divided by arbitrary national borders. The youngest applicant (age 36) told how her kids had to accompany her to classes when she was a student, and there’s

still no child care on the otherwise modern campus where she teaches. In his essay “Why We Travel” (The New York Times, April 1, 2011), Paul Theroux recalled a 1982 trip to northern Ireland: how everyday life continued despite episodes of violence, and “the exasperated good humor of humane people who were sick of it all.” Similarly, I remember the colleague in Islamabad who was afraid to take her children to the park, and a professor who accompanied me to a lovely hill town, once a popular resort, where he hadn’t dared to go with his own family. At the University of the Punjab, I met Iftikhar Baloch, principal of the College of Earth and Environmental Sciences. As reported in the Times, in April 2010, he had been beaten in his office after expelling members of an Islamist student group for intimidating fellow students. The faculty responded by striking for two and a half weeks. I want to bear witness to these colleagues, to their students, and to the often ordinary yet extraordinary circumstances in which they find themselves. Calling for dialogue and understanding may seem clichéd or naïve, but in the era of the 24-hour news cycle, while we worry here about budget cuts and tenure, what gets less noticed may be profound.
