case in our field. As we are well aware, you can take participant A to location B without any perceptible C emerging. The second statement squarely places the responsibility on the learner: “I changed my life because I chose to study a particular subject in a given location. In that process, I made the kinds of commitment to engagement and introspection that were transformational.” It can be argued that this is mere semantics but, in fact, it has several important, concrete, and practical implications for education abroad professionals. While it places the responsibility for learning on the shoulders of the participants, it also creates some educational imperatives for those promoting and conducting programs. In the promotion of education abroad and in advising students (at every stage of the endeavor), we need to be much more intentional and specific about concrete learning objectives. (real or invented) and wanting to study race and ethnicity in the most diverse city in the world: namely, London. Similarly, a desire to visit Australia is perfectly acceptable but can be satisfied by any number of means. A desire to study marine biology in one of the most effective locations for that objective is the real business of study abroad. The implication is that we have an obligation to define the rationale for a given location in terms that make intellectual sense. We have to move away from the language of tourism and stop talking about the “trip.” By prioritizing location over content, practitioners (be they U.S. universities, program providers or overseas entities) are inevitably signaling that they are in the business of edu-tourism rather than serious education abroad. Of course, location is not always what is emphasized over the educational content of the program abroad, but

in the promotion of education abroad and in advising students (at every stage of the endeavor), we need to be much more intentional and specific about concrete learning objectives. What or Where?
A related concern with the statement “study abroad changed my life” is that, by implication, it prioritizes location over knowledge and learning: it is abroad that caused this change not what was learnt there, or the manner in which the participant engaged with learning opportunities. In “I changed my life by studying X in Y” the priorities are reversed. The learner is made active rather than passive but the order in which the statement evolves is also of significance. The question of what is studied (X) has to be of more importance than the location (Y). This is far from being mere semantics and raises a number of practical implications. There is a significant difference between wanting to go to London because of all of its attractions we should acknowledge that sometimes, it does happen. We have to be able to define credibly the advantage of studying a given topic in a given location. We need to be precise in identifying the benefits of studying that topic in that location over the value of studying the same subject at home. Further, by mythologizing the transformative power of this generic place “abroad,” there is an implicit denigration of the home learning environment. This draws on the traditional notion of the United States as a less cultivated or sophisticated environment (characteristic, for example, of the writing of Washington Irving, Henry James, Mark Twain, and so on and so forth).1 It also relates to the more contemporary tendency of U.S. intellectuals to demonize the United
