Integrating Study abroad Into the curriculum: Theory and Practice across the disciplines

longstanding orthodoxies about study abroad and the role it has traditionally played as the sine qua non of campus internationalization policy. The editors, Elizabeth Brewer, director of international education at Beloit College, and Kiran Cunningham, professor of anthropology at Kalamazoo College, conceived the idea of this volume following a meeting of the American Council on Education (ACE) Internationalization Collaborative in 2004. They felt their different institutional approaches to internationalization and study abroad could benefit their respective faculties; this led to a series of curriculum development workshops on each campus. In the foreword, Madeleine Green, the vice president for international initiatives of ACE when this book was published, speaks of the unexamined assumption that international education comprises a series of activities sufficient unto themselves that did not require a particular strategy for integration with each other or with the larger academic enterprise. She comments that the time is past (admittedly for a select number of campuses) when institutions could point to their study abroad program as the primary source of international learning for their students. She says that “institutions that are serious [which ones are not?] about producing globally competent graduates must think beyond a course requirement here or an international student festival there…” to foster a deeper institutional commitment to achieve this outcome.

I’m not aware of a national consensus among international educators as to what constitutes qualitative programming and curricula content to graduate globally competent students; but there has been an important and ongoing national conversation about the importance of building wider opportunities for greater numbers of students, from more diverse backgrounds, to graduate with a wider world view and international experience. Green’s perspective is that given the consistently low numbers of U.S. students who study abroad, there needs to be a wider set of practices in place to offer more students opportunities to become globally competent. This book offers faculty and senior administrators options to do just that. Using the practices and policies from Beloit and Kalamazoo Colleges, the book illustrates how institutions might frame

internationalization policies, incorporating the design and implementation of study abroad, within a broader and integrative framework. The book’s chapters are written by staff and faculty from both Beloit and Kalamazoo—liberal arts institutions with firm and longstanding commitments to international education. Their focus is on how teaching and advising on a home campus contributes to the integration of study abroad within the curriculum. The authors believe that integrating study abroad into the curriculum “depends on intention, not material resources,” however, this idea does not hold up well in 2011 in light of the economic crisis that began in 2008 (about the time this volume was being edited for publication). Nevertheless, this volume’s compilation of innovative approaches to home campus curricular innovation that support and strengthen study abroad is extremely valuable precisely because of the precarious financial constraints facing higher education today. The domestic and global marketplace is demanding more accountability from higher education to graduate globally literate students—whether to work at home or abroad. The authors reexamine the assumption that efforts to “internationalize” undergraduate education can be realized solely through expansion of study abroad options. They challenge the idea that study abroad alone should be the sole yardstick to measure institutional commitment to internationalization—regardless of whether or not students return from these experiences more globally competent
