feel fully at home in any country. Nor do I feel fully at home in my country of origin— Romania. When I visit the country where I was born, I feel like an outsider; when I visit France I am a Romanian; and when I am in the United States, I am a foreigner. Am I a global citizen? I would be inclined to answer affirmatively, although I did not fill out any immigration forms to achieve this status, nor did I receive a global citizen passport. Actually, I feel it would be so much easier to get a global lawyer to fill out a global application with a time frame and fee, and to come to an ending point in the global journey: get the global citizen passport and that is it. Done! I think there is a lack of tangible and immediate outcome and a lack of fixed destination in the life journey of a global citizen as it is a continuous process of identity construction. I cannot really prove global citizenship with a piece of paper or credentials; I cannot measure it or assess it through

surveys or search for it in databases. Global citizenship is not something that we acquire instantly and then check off our list. Rather it is a continuous journey toward a destination, which is permanently under evaluation. In my present job, among other responsibilities, I read and review scholarship applications for study and research abroad. In this capacity, I interact with American students who are eager to become global citizens. In their application statements, they characterize, more or less accurately, the global citizen’s profile as they imagine it. I admire their courage, enthusiasm, and willingness to go out into the world and act for the common good of humanity. However, in my opinion, this task has a few downturns and one of them is the lack of the sense of belonging.

“Fitting in” vs. “Belonging to”
When I was an international student, I often confused the notion of “fitting in” with the notion of “belonging to” or used them interchangeably. I became really good at fitting into new educational systems, with their new requirements, new cultural codes, and evaluation standards. I know how to act to get acceptance in a new culture: what to say or not say publicly, how to connect to American students when teaching, what and how to achieve in order to get acceptance from the community—in my case the academic community—and how to develop resilience to stereotypes of Romanians and the French. However, with time, while on the global citizenship trip, I realized that “fitting in” and “belonging to” are not the same: fitting in is about assessing a situation and becoming who you need to be to be accepted; belonging, on the other hand, does not require us to change who we are: it requires us to be who we are.1 Once I was able to differentiate these two concepts, I started building my own space of belonging, a space where I can be myself. This space is where I can open my mind and project elements from a space of origin, such as native language, personal background from where I was born, memories, and past
