international students, located in France, and taught by French and international faculty. These two spaces are projecting elements selectively in the third blended space. In this new space, one can find elements composed from the input spaces (source and target) but additionally the blend develops new structure on its own. On one hand, in the source space the American students, although educated in their own educational system, are in a new territory, France, and meet students from other countries. On the other hand, in the target space, French students are in their own country but in a new educational system where they meet students from other horizons. Further, the international students are in a new country, new educational system, and meet new peers. All these elements are projected in the blend, the third identity space where all speak English, and more importantly, all students face something uncomfortably “new.” It is in this unknown space, new to every student, that world belonging is steadily cultivated. All of the students are challenged to find common ground of belonging. In Schneck’s inaugural speech at AUP, she noted: “We are characterized more by this métissage than by any simple French-American hybridity. In this interesting ‘third place’ where accented English often reigns, everyone starts on a level playing field. (…) AUP is a community of foreigners that feels like home.” She talks about hybridity and métissage in the third space. I go a step further and say it is more than that: it is more than contact and mutual influence when students mix their cultural backgrounds. In the blend, the way it is understood in cognitive sciences, a new identity is born, the global identity. In the source space, the American students are not global citizens, nor are the French and students of other nationalities in the target space. In the blend, and only there, one can say “I belong to the world while my home is here.” IE
