International Educator - March/April 2012 - 12

IN Brief
In Memoriam
NAFSA recently lost two former presidents who made outstanding contributions to the field of international education.
Eugene Chamberlain, NAFSA president from 1969–1970 and a four-time chair of Region XI, passed away on December 8. He was 91. Chamberlain started his career at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he worked for three decades in the International Students Office, retiring in 1986. Upon his retirement, NAFSA Region XI’s The Town Crier reported that “Gene has been a ‘Giant’ in the field, one of the early pioneers who forged the path in an emerging profession and established standards and procedures to assist burgeoning numbers of foreign nationals.” MIT in 1985 awarded Chamberlain its Billard Award, for “efforts to make MIT a truly international university.” August “Jerry” Benson, president of NAFSA from 1974–75, passed away on November 23 at the age of 94. Benson joined Michigan State University in 1964 as an adviser to foreign students and scholars in the Office of International Studies and Programs. During his tenure there he also led teams of U.S. educators to Japan, Taiwan, and the Middle East. He retired in 1983 as professor and advisor emeritus. Benson served as chairman of several committees and workshops devoted to promoting international educational exchange and published a variety of papers and articles. How Valuable Are UK Degrees in Canada and the United States?
NAFSA and the British Council recently hosted a presentation on a new report that examines employability of U.S. and Canadian students with UK-based degrees. The report, US Employer Perceptions of University Degrees Earned in the United Kingdom, demonstrates that degrees earned in the United Kingdom are viewed positively by North American employers.  The data also suggest that when employers understand foreign education systems, students with foreign credentials are viewed favorably and are as desirable as their counterparts with domestic degrees. The presentation featured panelists Rodney Moses, vice president of global recruiting, Hilton Worldwide; Betty Soppelsa, deputy executive director for conference planning, NAFSA; and Clifford Young, managing director, public sector practice, Ipsos Public Affairs.

Errata

In the July/August 2011 issue, there was an inadvertent factual error in “Encouraging STEM Students to Study Abroad” by Karen Leggett. The RISE program, a scholarship program sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), is not a “two-year-old program” as reported. RISE started in 2005 and ran in its seventh year in 2011. In the fair listings in the January/February 2012 issue, there were two listings with missing information. n■ The Hobsons Virtual Spring Asia Fair is March 31; no date had been listed. n■ The AIEF American Education Fair will host fairs in Shanghai, Shenyang, and Dalian, China, during July 2012.
