The fact that the United States hosts more international students than any other country is further evidence of the regard that the world has for the U.S. education system. The report also credits America’s strong education system and its ability to educate and develop capable workers as one of the main reasons for the country’s economic success. Because of the success of the U.S. system, other countries are following the lead and making vast improvements to their higher education systems. For example, the report features a chart indicating the percentage of adults with higher education degrees; the United States shows nearly no change over the course of four generations. Scholars in other countries are now matching the number of research articles that their U.S. counterparts produce, and foreign spending on research has increased much faster than in the United States. Another challenge for the U.S. higher education system is the number of U.S. students studying abroad. According to IIE’s Open Doors report, less than two percent of U.S. students study abroad. As students from other countries regularly attend universities in foreign institutions and learn about other cultures and languages, U.S. students often graduate with very little foreign language and cultural experience. In an increasingly global society, contend the report’s authors, the United States will be at a disadvantage on the world stage if the pattern continues. he American Council on Education (ACE) released a report in November concerning the changing atmosphere of higher education and the future of U.S. colleges and universities in the global setting. ACE appointed a special panel to analyze trends in higher education and develop a plan to keep U.S. colleges and universities competitive in the eyes of students around the world. In its publication, Strength through Global Leadership and Engagement: U.S. Higher Education in the 21st Century, ACE outlines several recommendations for institutions seeking to increase international engagement. The report claims that the United States has long been the leader in higher education and remains at the forefront to this day. According to the 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities cited in the report, more

A Look at International Student Recruitment Across Countries
A report on international student recruitment from NUFFIC, the Dutch organization focused on international cooperation in higher education, provides an overview of national policy strategies and instruments related to international student recruitment. International Student Recruitment: Policies and Developments in Selected Countries focuses on particular “recruiting countries” (the Netherlands, France, Germany, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, and China) and “target recruitment” countries (Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Egypt). While the information is geared toward Dutch policymakers, the country-specific details and comparative information provide a useful resource for those who work or are interested in international student recruitment and mobility.
