or hostel, further increases their awareness of the country’s relevant issues and can prompt a sense of social responsibility. On more than one occasion students have discussed (along with the major concerns of overpopulation, famine, and pollution) topics such as (1) how we, as “Americans,” are fortunate to have continuous electricity at our fingertips; (2) how U.S. supermarkets, with their aisles of processed and frozen foods, do not provide the freshness in their goods or the sense of community found in Ghanaian open air markets; and (3) how a single flush of an American toilet uses so much water unnecessarily. It is my assumption that here at home any educator would be hard-pressed to hear such astute observations during dormitory dining hall conversations. While I continue to observe my study abroad students, each year I gain a greater

appreciation for the way that unforeseen circumstances (those that can never be accounted for in a syllabus or simulated in a classroom) are the finest occasions for facilitating experiential and transformative learning. The personal discomfort created by cultural barriers, when dealt with accordingly, helps the student build character and gain confidence as they achieve a sense of command over the immediate and foreign surroundings. While such “informal” occasions for learning can arise anywhere, and at any time, it is important to provide time for personal debriefing and group sharing whereby students can process and decode their experiences. On many occasions I have witnessed students endure personal discomfort only to realize that, because they cannot change their immediate circumstance, they must alter their perspective if they are going to remain cool, calm, and collected. valuable awareness also results in realizing the nature of past experiences and vows to change negative patterns in the future. One such episode took place as a young student was annoyed and very vocal about the crowded and run-down conditions during her first tro-tro experience. Tro-tros are Ghana’s primary form of mass transportation. During our commute a mother with two children and a very large back satchel entered the crowded tro-tro van. The student was, along with the rest of our group, amazed at how (1) the burdened women had no struggle as the local passengers assisted her with her children and goods, and (2), in a vehicle that appeared to be completely full, no one complained or winced as space miraculously appeared for the family. At that moment I saw a complete change of heart in that student as she recognized Ghanaian solidarity, resourcefulness, and industry. From that point on, tro-tros became a source of excitement and a frequent topic of conversation for this young scholar. Later that evening she shared with the group how U.S. citizens are fortunate to have excellent roads and transit systems, and that “we” as a nation should be more
