aware of this and not take all of our luxuries and comforts for granted. This was further elaborated on in her final paper as she stated that “Americans” should learn to be more “neighbor conscious” like Ghanaians. As would be expected, in the four years of leading this course, I have witnessed such student “awakenings” on topics related to human rights, healthcare, medicine, food, education, religion, politics, the arts, the environment, and family, to name a few. While cultural differences are a primary source of challenge for students, I’ve seen transformative-based learning happen when students observe commonalities shared in their cross-cultural exchanges. As students process their reactions to foreign social systems and ways of living, they begin to recognize that many of the day-today routines are guided by the same forces, needs, and desires that shape their own existence. Overall, this level of identification and bonding is, perhaps more than anything else, the reason that before departure, tears are shed and promises to remain in touch are shared by the group members. In faculty-led study abroad courses such as my own, the value of giving students the opportunity to interact with village families and residents, while cultivating self-reliance in the learning process, is a portal to transformation that can never be fully achieved in a standard classroom setting. Also, any educator who has had a degree of success in providing such an experience for students knows that the worth of creating such an opportunity for young adults far exceeds the personal sacrifices, economic obstacles, and scheduling challenges. In this respect, as this experience has increased my awareness of what “true education” is, I believe that a transformative experience as a learning outcome is not limited to the student, but it also extends to anyone who takes on an in loco parentis position in leading students through the predeparture, onsite, and postreturn phases of any faculty-led, study abroad program.
