Getting to Know International Students
Strivers are the largest segment of all international students and their main concerns involve the academic rigor of the institution and access to financial aid, according to the report. Explorers, by contrast, are most interested in student life and other unique learning experiences while their concern for academic challenges and school ranking is much lower. The report notes that Explorers are the most likely group of students to use an education agent in their search for the right school. Institutional websites and family networks are the two main channels through which international students gather information about prospective colleges and universities, but social media play an increasingly important role in the selection process, according to the report. Of those international students surveyed, 90 percent visited official Web sites to research potential institutions and 67 percent looked to family and friends for more information. When using social media, more than 50 percent began following institutional social media accounts before deciding to apply, and 37 percent followed those same accounts to help determine which acceptance offer(s) to choose. The report says that institutions need to become active on local social media platforms, especially in China, if they want to reach the intended audience. The report also compares the four student segments to geographic location to help institutions identify majorities and patterns in different places throughout the world. For example, students from Africa were far more likely to ask questions about financial aid opportunities and tuition costs than any other group. Students from the Middle East were the least concerned about tuition and the most concerned about student life and student services. International educators looking for new trends in recruiting and admissions may find this report useful in identifying the type of student interested in attending a certain school, the region of the globe in which the majority of those students live, and the questions that the students might ask. ESEARCHERS ARE HOPING A NEW REPORT on international students will help higher education institutions better understand the needs of students bound for study in the United States. Rahul Choudaha, Kata Orosz, and Li Chang of World Education Services, Inc. (WES) recently released their findings in Not All International Students Are the Same: Understanding Segments, Mapping Behavior. The report categorizes international students into four groups, based on financial resources and academic ability, and analyzes behav-

ioral patterns of students in each of the groups. This information is intended to provide insight into the types of international students that may be interested in particular programs at U.S. colleges and universities and how to market to these students. The report divides students into the following segments: Strugglers, Explorers, Strivers, and Highfliers. Strugglers and Strivers both have limited access to financial resources and assistance, but Strivers perform better academically while Strugglers have low academic preparedness. Explorers and Highfliers have greater access to financial resources, but Explorers are not as prepared academically as Highfliers. As a result, international students in these four categories have different needs and questions when researching U.S. institutions.
