n■ Visitor or Inhabitant? Addressing the
Needs of Undergraduate Transnational
Medical Students—Jennifer Lindley, Louise McCall, and Adela Abu-Arab of Monash
University report on a study designed to
identify key issues for students in an undergraduate medical course with cross-border
delivery and look at the impact of these issues on students’ ability to learn.

The Cervantes Institute has released a report
analyzing the rise in demand for Spanish
across Asia. According to the report,
El Español en el Mundo, the most
promising new markets are in mainland
China, Hong Kong, Japan, and India. In
China, about 25,000 students studied
Spanish last year, a dramatic increase
from 1,500 in 2000, according to a
report in The PIE News.
Today, nearly 500 million people
speak Spanish worldwide, according to the institute, with an additional 18 million people studying
Spanish as a foreign language. The
report forecasts that by 2030, 7.5 percent
of the world will become native Spanish
speakers, second only to Chinese.
