IN Brief
Study Abroad: What Motivates or Deters Students?
While reluctance to leave family and friends was identified as an important factor for not leaving home, both U.S.
and UK respondents felt that cost was the greatest barrier
to studying abroad. More than 70 percent of students from
both countries felt that they lacked adequate knowledge
to make a decision about studying abroad and indicated
that having more information about funding could potentially lead them to pursue an education abroad experience.
The study also revealed that 54 percent of UK respondents and 40 percent of U.S. respondents identified the Internet as the primary information
resource for education abroad, above university professors and study abroad offices.

A lack of information about the process and funding for
international education is the greatest deterrent to studying
abroad, says a new study conducted by the British Council. The report, Broadening Horizons, surveyed more than
10,800 U.S. and British students in late 2012 to identify what
motivates or hinders students when it comes to deciding
whether to study in another country. The majority of U.S. respondents to the survey were between age 16 and 19, while
the majority of UK respondents were between age 18 and 21.
According to the report, 20 percent of UK and 56 percent
of U.S. respondents have considered studying abroad. Both
British and U.S. students were most driven to study abroad
by their desires to have a “unique adventure” overseas. However, significantly more British students (48 percent) viewed
overseas study as a means to improve employment prospects compared with U.S. students (19 percent).
