English "Gallops" Ahead

Initial findings from a new study on English as a medium of instruction reveal that students in
non-English speaking-countries increasingly are learning subjects such as math and science
in English, not in their native language.
English language instruction, according to the study, "is continuing to gallop ahead."
According to English as a Medium of Instruction-A Growing Global Phenomenon: Phase 1,
a report produced by the British Council and Oxford University Department of Education,
English is quickly stepping up as a medium of instruction for academic subjects such
as science, mathematics, geography, and medicine. This holds true both in public and
private education, and across primary, secondary, and tertiary education levels.
One of the findings of the study is that many teachers, parents, and students hold
the view that English as a medium of instruction is a passport to a global world.
"More and more institutions across the world are using English to teach
academic subjects, spurred on by a desire to internationalize their offer and
their academic profile," said Professor Ernesto Macaro, director of the
Department of Education at the University of Oxford. "This phenomenon
has very important implications, in non-Anglophone countries, for
teaching and learning as well as for language policy decisions."

AUSTRALIA PLANS TO INVEST AUS $16.5 MILLION IN GRANTS
to help Australian college and university students study abroad. The Australian government says
it plans to provide scholarships for more than 5,000 students.
Australia Minister for Education Christopher Pyne said the scholarships will boost collaboration between Australian and overseas institutions and help students get a leg up in their careers.
"The government is focused on ensuring Australia is an outward-looking nation, fully engaged internationally, and our students have the best opportunities available to them," Mr.
Pyne said. "This Australian government funding will provide learning opportunities for
students to get international experience and form networks around the globe."
Scholarships will fund study abroad placements in Europe, the Americas,
Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific and will be available through
several student mobility programs: the International Student Exchange
Program, the Study Overseas Short-Term Mobility Program, the Vocational Education and Training Outbound Mobility Program, and
the AsiaBound Program.
According to Pyne, the new investment is intended to
complement AUS $100 million in funding over four years
for the New Colombo Plan, which is designed to foster
deeper relationships with the Asia-Pacific region by
supporting scholarships and grants for study and
internships for Australian undergraduates.
