CAMPUS PROFILE

| Columbus State University  | Columbus, GA

1980s while attending continuing education classes through the Oxford Berkeley Program.
"Every time we went, they had a mixture of undergraduates,
graduate students, and outsiders like us. We had a very impressive,
very warm tutor who was a born educator. The thing that impressed
us was that they wanted us foreigners and rebels to learn," he said.
The Spencers returned three times and then began paying for their
children's teachers and later faculty from Presbyterian College and
Columbus State to attend the summer sessions.
Now, CSU faculty teach three, two-week courses there each summer and McCrillis takes faculty there for a workshop each autumn.
In addition, Columbus State sends up to five students a year to spend
a semester at an Oxford college and take tutorials with a don. Some
Oxford undergraduates live in Spencer House with them. Spencer,
the benefactor, donates an additional $150,000 a year to cover all the
students' costs above CSU's regular tuition.

LESSONS LEARNED
Put internationalization on the
calling card. Columbus State led
off its 2013-2018 Strategic Plan
with this vision: "Columbus State
University strives to be a first
choice institution for discerning
students who seek challenging
programs, engaged faculty, and
a vibrant, globally connected
campus culture." It now recruits
internationally. President
Timothy Mescon believes it is
poised "to play in a much bigger
sandbox and provide incredibly
high-quality opportunities in all
corners of the globe for students
who matriculate here. That's a
powerful message."

Move beyond study abroad.
Columbus State started
its Center for International
Education (CIE) with
study abroad in mind.
Internationalizing the curriculum
and campus life came much
later. Now administrators see
the new International Studies
Certificate as the key to tie all
these activities together. "It
gives students an outcome
they can see very clearly.
They get recognized," said
CIE Director Neal McCrillis.
The administration released a
professor from half her courses
to be the coordinator.

Provide ample opportunities
for faculty development.
The Center for International
Education offers an annual
workshop for faculty in Oxford
to encourage them to design
new study abroad courses. It
awards up to four international
curriculum development grants
each year. Spencer House,
Columbus State's own house in
Oxford, England, is always part
of the pitch in recruiting faculty.
Columbus State planned ahead
when it built a new downtown
dorm, setting aside three
apartments for visiting scholars
from Latin America, Europe, and
elsewhere.

Take an entrepreneurial
approach and network.
President Mescon, a former
business dean and authority
on global entrepreneurship,
applauds what he calls the
entrepreneurial approach the CIE
takes to expanding international
programs and activities. "You've
got to seed faculty and incent
them to explore these global
opportunities," he said. Making
a virtue of necessity, the small
staff of the CIE relies heavily on
strong participation and support
from faculty, which McCrillis said
reflects "the bottom up origins
of what we do."
