NAFSA Launches Cuba Initiative
NAFSA has launched a
new program designed
to promote partnerships
between U.S. and Cuban
academic institutions. The
NAFSA Cuba Engagement
Initiative includes two interconnected projects that promote
sustainable academic partnerships and
mobility between the United States
and Cuba-the Cuba-U.S. Higher
Education Dialogue Project and the
Educators for Cuba Campaign.
The Cuba-U.S. Higher Education Dialogue Project will feature
educational events designed to help
participants gain insight into the
Cuban and U.S. higher education
landscape. As part of this project,

NAFSA will provide travel grants for
Cuban education leaders to attend
the NAFSA 2016 and 2017 annual
conferences and other international
education events.
The Educators for Cuba Campaign
will provide advocacy leadership for
those in higher education seeking to
support the ongoing U.S.-Cuba normalization process and to end the U.S.
embargo. NAFSA continues to partner
with other organizations such as the
American Association of State Colleges and Universities, the Latin America
Working Group, Civitas Global Educational Services, the Washington Office
on Latin America, and Engage Cuba
to mobilize political support for easing
trade and travel restrictions with Cuba.

"As the U.S. and Cuban governments continue the historic process
of normalizing relations, it is important that people and cultures
that have been separated for more
than 50 years have a structured and
meaningful framework in which to
engage and learn from each other,"
said Marlene M. Johnson, NAFSA's
executive director and chief executive officer. "International education
and partnerships have always played
an important role in building understanding and collaboration between
nations, and we now have an opportunity to positively impact this
historic process."

THE RATE OF GROWTH

in the number of international
graduate students applying to
and enrolling in institutions in
the United States has slowed,
according to a December 2015

report from the Council of
Graduate Students (CGS).
According to the CGS report,
final applications and first-time
enrollment of international
graduate students in the United

States increased by 3 percent
and 5 percent respectively between fall 2014 and fall 2015. The
previous growth rates, from fall
2013 to fall 2014, were 10 percent
for final applications and 8 percent for first-time enrollment.
The 2015 findings also reveal
the following:
n  Nearly four out of five firsttime international graduate
students in the United States are
pursuing master's or certificate
programs.
n  Chinese and Indian students
continue to constitute large
shares of international graduate
applications and enrollment in
the United States.

n  Saudi Arabian students
account for 3 percent of international applications to master's
and certificate programs in the
United States-nearly as many
master's applications as those
coming from Europe.
n  Engineering is the most
popular broad field of study
for international graduate
students.

Graduate Applications and
Enrollment: Fall 2015, is
