Poland: An Emerging Hotspot for
International Students

"While searching for universities in Europe I was
mainly focused on two countries: the Czech Republic and Poland. The main reasons are that they
provide a good European education for an affordable price, they are not too far from Ukraine, and
we have similar cultures and languages," she says.
Afanasieva ended up choosing Poland. In 2015
she finished her bachelor's degree in business administration from Kozminski University in Warsaw. She
had such a positive experience that she ended up staying
for graduate school.
"Now I am in the first year of a master's in management in virtual environments in the English track at
Kozminski," she says.
Afanasieva is one of the approximately 50,000 international students currently enrolled in full-degree programs
at universities across Poland. Poland's selling points as an
international study destination include relatively low tuition, low cost of living, a high quality of education, and
an increasing number of programs in English.
"Polish universities offer more than 500 degree programs in foreign languages with tuition fees significantly
lower than in other EU countries," says Polish secretary of
state Aleksander Bobko.
Students also see the quality of education as improving all the time. "I would recommend studying here since
more and more effort and money is put in the education
in Poland," says Nikola Ristic, a master's student from Serbia
studying international business at the University of Warsaw.
International student enrollment in Poland has steadily
grown year-over-year for more than a decade, increasing
from fewer than 10,000 students in 2004-05 to more than
46,000 students in 2014-15. Recent estimates from the
Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education (MSHE)
put the current number of international students at Poland at more than 50,000.

This figure does not include students studying in Poland on short-term programs. In 2013-14, for example,
Poland hosted an additional 12,000 exchange students
through the Erasmus program, and sent 15,000 Polish
students abroad, according to the European Commission.
Bianka Siwinska, executive director of Perspektywy Education Foundation, a nonprofit organization that supports
education in Poland, and coordinator of Study in Poland, attributes some of the overall growth in international student
enrollment to the recruitment activities of Polish universities
abroad. For example, Study in Poland (www.studyinpoland.
pl) is a consortium of 60 Polish universities created in 2005
by agreement between Conference of Rectors of Academic
Schools in Poland (CRASP) and Perspektywy Education
Foundation. The initiative includes joint marketing activities
and encourages Polish universities to increase the number of
studies offered in English and other international languages.
They also organize study tours, educational fairs, and events
in key markets. Study in Poland also has an office in Ukraine
hosted at Kiev Technical University.
"Polish higher education institutions have a lot of experience in international marketing now," Siwinska says.
Kozminski University (KU), where Afanasieva studies, is the most internationalized private higher education
institution in Poland, according to a 2014 national ranking
by Perspektywy Education Foundation. Between 2012-13
and 2014-15, the number of degree-seeking international
students at KU increased from 627 to 1,005, jumping from
approximately 10 percent to around 18 percent of the entire student body.
Kozminski offers undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate,
and PhD programs in English, as well as a number of doubleand joint-degree programs with partners across Europe.
They also strategically use alumni to help promote KU
in their home countries. "We use a lot of social media
activities where students talk about us and with us, not
