just listen to what we say," says Grzegorz
Mazurek, KU's vice rector for international
cooperation.
For example, they have students publish blog posts at www.studentsinwarsaw.
com. "It is a blog platform which we use to
promote not only KU but mostly to give a
chance for foreigners studying in Warsaw to
know each other better, to integrate, and to
see how they perceive Poland," he explains.
However, despite institutions' increased
experience with international recruitment
and joint marketing activities between
consortiums of Polish higher education
institutions, there is no national agency
dedicated to promoting Poland as a study
destination, something that Siwinska sees as
a challenge to further internationalization
of Polish higher education.
"The biggest challenge is the lack of a
specialized, independent agency supporting
internationalization of higher education in

Kozminski University students in Warsaw, Poland

International student enrollment in Poland has steadily grown
year-over-year for more than a decade, increasing from fewer than
10,000 students in 2004-05 to more than 46,000 students in 2014-15.
Poland, like the German DAAD or French
CampusFrance. Polish HEIs have advocated
for this solution for last 10 years. Without
such a specialized...(well-financed) body,
the shift to next level of internationalization is not possible and will be limited to
the activities of individual higher education
institutionsor groups of higher education
institutions," Siwinska explains.

Unprecedented Growth
From Ukraine
According to the Ministry of Science and
Higher Education, the annual average
increase in the number of international
degree-seeking students between 2003 and
2013 was 17 percent. Between 2013-14
and 2014-15, however, the growth
in number of international students
studying in Poland was unprecedented, jumping by 10,000 students, a 28
percent increase, due to a huge influx

of Ukrainian students. Ukrainians currently
make up approximately half of Poland's total
international student population, according
to Perspektywy Education Foundation.
While Poland has always been a popular
destination for Ukrainian students, the recent surge is due to the recent political crisis
and military conflict with Russia in eastern
Ukraine, along with sustained marketing and
recruitment efforts in Ukraine by Polish higher education institutions over the last decade.
"During the last few years the number
of Ukrainian students coming to Poland has
been increasing steadily, but to be honest I
am not surprised about it as the quality of
studies and life is completely different," Afanasieva explains.
"Poland is developing very fast and the
educational system too, which is why the
Polish educational market is becoming more
and more attractive for Ukrainians."
Siwinska expects the growth from
Ukraine to continue for the
next few years: "The increase
in the number of international
students in Poland is due to unprecedented influx of students
from Ukraine. The Ukrainian
market is relatively large, so I
expect this trend to continue
for a couple more years."
At the University of Warsaw, Ukrainians make up
about a third of its international degree-seeking students.
"Generally, Polish universities are positive about hosting
them," says Anna  Sadecka,
head of the Section for EU
Educational Programmes at
the University of Warsaw.
Some experts, however,
have expressed concern about
the huge number of students
from a single country. AccordM AY + J U N E .16 INTERNATIONAL EDUCATOR
