Part of the reason for this increasing
enrollment, Weller said, is that India has a
growing middle class with more disposable
income, and parents in India are more willing than in previous years to let their 18- and
19-year-olds study abroad.
"Before, there was a lot of family pressure to stay home for undergrad studies,"
Weller said. "Now, parents are expecting
their children to be more independent
than before. And parents see a return on
their investment more than they did before.
There's a greater appreciation for an American bachelor's degree. Also, parents are
seeing other parents send their undergrads
to the U.S. and they see how successful
[those students] have become personally
and professionally."

Selling Schools
How are U.S. schools and those in other nations selling themselves to Indian families?

For one thing, recruiters can point out
that it's typically easier to get into a U.S. college than an Indian one.
"[The Indian student's] reality is that if
they're not scoring in the high 90s in all subjects, they can forget about a college in India,"
Barolla said. "We go in there and explain that
our admissions processes are different."
Another draw for Indian students is the
flexibility that a U.S. education offers. In
some nations, students are "tracked" into
programs based on their test scores, or aren't
allowed to change their coursework during
the middle of their school career. That's not
the case in the United States, Barolla said.
While the majority of Indian graduate
students have gravitated toward STEM
studies-nearly 8 in 10 Indian students in
the United States are enrolled in STEM
courses-an increasing number of undergraduates are pursuing studies in fields
such as psychology, international relations,

or fashion design, Barolla said.
Moreover, he said, U.S. schools offer
training in what he calls "soft skills"-such
as management training-that Indian institutions don't.
Money also talks.
Kurtz Allaei says that for the coming fall
semester of 2016, there has been "a sharp
uptick" in undergraduate applications from
India-in fact, double the amount of previous years.
"Since Indian undergraduates tend to be
well prepared, with strong English language
skills, our experience is that they receive numerous scholarship offers," said Kurtz Allaei,
who noted that the Indian student population at her school increased from 242 in 2010
to 511 in 2015. "We adjusted our scholarship
programs for fall 2016, but it is too soon to
determine the impact on enrollment yield."
Other schools have also found that
scholarships are a way to lure bright Indian
students.
"In India, it's not a question of why study
in the U.S., but how to study in the U.S," said
Renuka Raja Rao, who works in New Delhi
as the country coordinator for EducationUSA Advising Services, which is part of the
United States-India Educational Foundation
(USIEF). "Providing scholarships and offering application fee waivers are a sure way to
ensure student attention."
Said Barolla: "There are more and more
competing interests in India from universities around the world trying to attract top
students. At the end of the day, your value
proposition would be the cost. You have to
talk about scholarships, and I'm noticing more
and more universities creating more scholarships and financial aid for Indian students."

The vehicles that U.S. schools use to attract
Indian students vary.
For instance, Weller of the University of
Cincinnati employs two full-time people in
an office based in Mumbai. Both are indigenous Indians, which allows them to forge a
personal connection with students and their
parents. They speak the local language. Their
