Investing in Social Justice

nvesting in higher education for emerging
social justice leaders from marginalized
backgrounds leads to significant benefits for
communities, according to a recent study
from the Institute of International Education (IIE).
The study explored the effects of the Ford
Foundation International Fellowships Program
(IFP), which operated from 2001-2013, on nearly
2,000 alumni. The fellowships program offered
postgraduate study opportunities to more than
4,300 social justice leaders from 22 countries representing the world's most vulnerable populations
in Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East,
and Russia.
Social Justice and Sustainable Change: The Impacts of Higher Education, an IIE report based on
the study, illustrates that investments in higher education for individuals can result in considerable
multiplier effects for communities, organizations,
and societies.
In addition to the many positive impacts on
individual fellows, the following benefits were re-

ported by IFP alumni according to the report:

More than 900 IFP alumni have created new
programs and organizations. Ninety-seven percent of these initiatives address social issues or
provide community services.
n IFP alumni say that these new programs and
organizations have had an impact on 9.5 million
adults and children in the IFP countries, as well as
860,000 additional individuals worldwide.
n Eighty-four percent of IFP alumni report making improvements in the organizations where
they work or volunteer as a result of their IFP
fellowship.
n IFP alumni have created nearly 34,600 products
and forms of outreach related to social justice,
including more than 12,000 conference presentations; nearly 15,500 books, reports, journal articles,
or news articles; and more than 1,700 works of art.
n More than 95 percent of IFP alumni are in touch
with each other and are collaborating on social justice issues and initiatives.

Times Higher Education (THE) has
released a new ranking featuring
the top Latin American universities.
Brazil leads the list of 50 institutions,
with 23 Brazilian universities claiming
spots, including the first and second
positions. Chile has 11 institutions in
the top 50, while Mexico has eight.
The THE Latin America
University Rankings use the same
13 performance indicators as the
World University Rankings. These
performance indicators are grouped
into five main areas: teaching (the
learning environment); research
(volume, income, and reputation);
citations (research influence);
international outlook (staff, students,
and research); and industry income
(knowledge transfer). In the research
category, however, to account
for lower publication volumes in
Latin America, the research output
threshold for eligible institutions was
decreased from 1,000 papers to 500
papers over a five-year period.

More than 80 percent of international students surveyed say that
university study is the best way to prepare for their careers.
That is just one of the findings in a new report from Hobsons
Solutions titled Creating a Sustainable International Education Sector:
A Manifesto for Intelligence-Led Marketing and Recruitment of
International Students.
Data in the report is based on a global survey of 43,909 students,
representing 208 nationalities and 175 countries of residence.
When asked what factors motivate them to study, 89 percent of
international students responded that personal interest motivates them;
40 percent said they study where there is high demand for employees,
and 38 percent base their decision on expected earnings in the industry.
According to the report, institutions need to focus on producing
work-ready graduates, connecting their programs to local industries,
and demonstrating the value that comes from their degrees both to
students and to employers.
