International Educator - September/October 2016 - 15

or courses with a global focus. While
this is not surprising, since it reflects
how internationalizing the curriculum
generally proceeds, I was disappointed
not to see more chapters that described
ambitious efforts to rethink existing
programs since this is the among the most
challenging work in internationalizing
the curriculum. The fallback position
of higher education institutions in
addressing new challenges is to create
new courses or programs rather than
alter existing ones. Creating special
programs with an international focus
(the topic of several chapters) does not
obviate the need for students in "regular"
programs to become globally aware and

culturally competent. Rethinking an entire
program requires collective reflection
and action by faculty members and a
sense that the faculty jointly owns the
whole curriculum and not just their own
courses. Two chapters that deal with this
head-on are in the health section: Chapter
14 on the medical school at the University
of Saskatchewan and Chapter 15 on the
nursing curriculum at the University of
Northern Arizona.
The authors are largely from
Anglophone countries, with a few from
Western Europe. As the editors rightly
point out, this geographical imbalance
in authorship reflects the level of activity
on the ground. In my experience,

internationalizing the curriculum in many
parts of the world is narrowly defined
as programs in English, joint or dual
degrees, or language and area studies
courses. Internationalizing the curriculum
is still in its very early stages in many
countries and on many campuses.
This volume makes an excellent
contribution to advancing the knowledge
base of internationalizing the curriculum.
Its introductory chapters and rich and
varied narratives provide a valuable
combination of theory, on the ground
experience, and personal reflection.
