world is a key theme in this issue of International Educator.
Our cover story, "Collaborating with Africa," shows how international partnerships with higher education institutions in Africa
are growing as the continent has an increasing demand for higher
education.
In Frontlines, our column focused on public policy issues,
NAFSA CEO and Executive Director Marlene M. Johnson pens
"International Educators Seek Candidates Who Reflect Our Values." In this provocative treatise, our association's leader explains
why it is critical in this election year to seek out and support candidates. "As international educators, our students are our priority...we
must choose leaders who understand the importance of education
abroad and international learning...isolating our students from the
languages, cultures, and beliefs of the rest of the world puts them at
risk of falling behind in an increasingly global society," she reminds
us. And of equal importance, she makes this very important statement about why choosing the right political candidates is crucial to
international students and scholars: "Supporting policies that welcome international students helps strengthen ties with countries
across the globe and enhances our own national security." Johnson's
entire column is on page 4.
For the first time ever, International Educator is including
campus spotlights of the select institutions chosen for specific internationalization efforts by the jury of the 2015 Paul Simon Award for
Campus Internationalization. The three campus spotlights included
this issue are Rice University, which was recognized for its Brasil@
Rice initiative; Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), which
was recognized for the VCU Globe initiative; and Wake Forest
University, which was recognized for its Workshop on Intercultural
Skills Enhancement (WISE). The full set of profiles can be seen in
Internationalizing the Campus 2015: Profiles of Success at Colleges
and Universities. The award winners and spotlight recipients for
2016 will be announced during International Education Week this
coming November.
Our annual International Enrollment Management supplement
is also included in this issue. It's cover story, "Going Social," is about
how institutions can successfully employ social media in international student recruitment strategies.
IE

ERRATA: In the July/August 2016 issue, in the question-and-answer section of
the Voices interview with Ellen Hazelkorn, her last name was mistakenly spelled as
"Hazelton." Her name was correctly listed as Ellen Hazelkorn in the biography and
title of the article. IE regrets the inconsistency. A corrected version of the interview is
available online at www.nafsa.org/ie.
