Moving Forward

O

N JANUARY 1, 2017, Elaine Meyer-Lee, EdD assumed her role as NAFSA president and chair of the
Board of Directors. She is associate vice president for global learning and leadership development at Agnes
Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, and has been a senior international officer and intercultural leadership,
diversity, and inclusion educator for 14 years. She previously served within NAFSA's International Education
Leadership Knowledge Community and on the Annual Conference Committee.

How and why did
you initially become
involved in NAFSA
and what made you
want to become
NAFSA president?
NAFSA has played
an absolutely pivotal
role in my career for
the past 27 years. As
part of my early career
discernment in the late
80s, I first attended a
conference in Region
XI, which ignited my
passion to enter the
[international education] field.
I initially went the faculty route of research and
teaching and consulted on external outcomes assessment of others' intercultural education efforts. In
2001, when I was ready to transition to direct full-time
involvement in the field, the first thing I did was attend
a Region VII conference. I have attended every annual
conference since 2003.
Having gained so much from NAFSA, I was eager to
contribute in return, which I first did through presenting
many sessions, mostly on outcomes assessment or leadership. In 2009, I helped to start the Women's College
& University Institutional Interest Group, and became
chair of it in 2010. Given all of this positive experience
with NAFSA as a member-leader, I was happy to be
nominated and elected in 2013 to foster its continued
development through serving on its board, where I was
secretary/chair of the Governance Committee in 2015.
Although I had nominated others for the challenge
of becoming president at the time of bringing on a new
CEO, I was honored to learn that I had been nominated by my colleagues. I accepted because I saw that

my experience as secretary and from serving on the
search committee to select the new CEO could bring
distinctive continuity and stability to that transition. I
look forward to negotiating that transition smoothly in
collaboration with the excellent staff, strong board, and
extraordinary new CEO we have in place.
As you look ahead to the next year, what do you see
as NAFSA's main priorities?
As a member organization, we will continue to serve
our members (each other!), resource their professional
needs, and advocate for their values as the field evolves.
That will certainly involve maintaining and strengthening our distinctive voice on behalf of the contributions
international education makes and for policies that support it. It will also mean listening closely for what will
provide busy and stretched members the most needed
and valuable support, as efficiently as possible. I personally am delighted by the increasing focus on diversity
and inclusion within our member-leader network, and
look forward to attention to that issue infusing all that
we do as an organization.
What strategies will you use to deepen member
engagement in the organization?
I know that both Executive Director and CEO Esther
Brimmer and I are deeply committed to member
engagement as the purpose and lifeblood of the organization. The extremely effective member-leader network
at both the regional and national level will continue to
drive member engagement. As chair of the board, I see
my role as keeping all of our internal processes aligned
with supporting and resourcing the committees in carrying out their charges, and ensuring that lines of communication are open to hear from all our wonderfully
diverse members and keep them updated in a transparent way. n
