Serving As a Bridge
Between East and West
An Interview with Lebanese American University President
Joseph G. Jabbra
Joseph G. Jabbra, president of Lebanese American University (LAU) since 2004, is a scholar and
educator, author of 12 books and more than 33 scholarly articles, an internationally recognized
expert on academic administration and accreditation, and a longtime proponent of international
education. Prior to assuming the presidency at LAU, Jabbra served as academic vice president and
full professor of political science at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles for 14 years, following a decade of service as vice president of academic research at St. Mary's University in Nova
Scotia, Canada. Jabbra earned his law degree at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut, and his PhD
in political science from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
LAU, which was founded in 1835 by American missionaries as a school for girls, is an accredited American university operating in Beirut and Byblos, Lebanon, under a charter from the
state of New York. Under Jabbra's leadership and commitment to international education, LAU
became the first Middle Eastern university to establish a campus in the United States when it
inaugurated its New York Academic Center in 2013 in the heart of Manhattan to serve as a
platform for global educational outreach and cross-cultural dialogue. During Jabbra's 12 years at
LAU, the university has greatly expanded its international exchange and study abroad programs,
which have sent LAU students from all academic fields to top universities in the United States,
Canada, and Europe, and hosted thousands of visiting students from around the world on its
campuses in Lebanon and New York.
IE: How is the role and importance of international
education changing?
JABBRA: We are living in a very complex, globalized
world and therefore our graduates can no longer be
focused only on the local. They have to be aware of what's
going on in the world, and the curriculum we put in place
must respond to these global changes. Technological
advancements have brought down all the walls of separation, and the local has become global, while the global has
become local. So the arena of operation for our graduates
is not just Lebanon anymore; it's the entire world. It is not
only a responsibility for universities, but also an obligation to provide international education opportunities for
our students if we are to train and educate them for the
twenty-first century.

IE: What do you see as the role of American
universities in the Middle East and North African
region in educating global citizens?
JABBRA: We're going through a lot of changes in this
part of the world, but I think we have the responsibility
to be a bridge between East and West. In light of this,
we are compelled to provide the opportunity for an
exchange of points of view and experiences, so that both
sides can genuinely understand from where the other
side is coming. Unfortunately, one of the shortcomings
of globalization is that due to massive technological
advances, our differences have been laid bare, and those
differences have been the cause of significant challenges
and troubles in the world. Institutes of higher education
must provide the opportunities to bring people together,
