but also in Sidon, Tripoli, and Bekaa Valley.
That local connection is very important and
a clear indication that the education we offer,
although focused on the American liberal arts
model, is also deeply rooted in this region. As an
American institution that has been in the region
for close to 200 years, Lebanon and our region
is our foundation and our home. This sense of
a global home, fused from our East and West
context, is what we offer each student and is
the very essence of the experience of every student from the day they step foot on our campus.
This global belonging is what we are known for
and what is absolutely central to our mission-
passion and commitment to our students.

Lebanese American University President Joseph G. Jabbra

making sure they learn to solve disagreements by peaceful means rather than by the gun. What this region
needs is education, education, education centered on
integrity and ethics. This is something we are instilling
in our students so that they can become the best ambassadors; the ones who will, through their future careers,
communicate what this region stands for and build
bridges to it from around the world.
IE: As an American university in the Middle East,
how do you balance the local and global on campus
and in the community?
JABBRA: At LAU, we try to implement the values of
American higher education, and we've been responding
effectively through our curriculum to the needs not only
of our young people but also of society, which we serve
through continuing education and civic engagement
programs. We are present not only in Beirut and Byblos

IE: Why was establishing a campus in New
York a priority for you during your time at
LAU?
JABBRA: We are an American institution, and
it is incumbent upon us to have a headquarters
in New York. At the inauguration of the New
York Headquarters and Academic Center, I said
that in 1835 the United States gave Lebanon a
gift-through Sarah Huntington Smith, who
came here and established a school for the
education of women in the Ottoman Empire.
In creating the New York Headquarters and Academic
Center, Lebanon is coming back to the United States,
through LAU, to return this gift which will serve as a
platform for building bridges between East and West.
IE: How has the Arab Spring impacted international
education in the region?
JABBRA: We have been fortunate in Lebanon because
we have had very few outbreaks of violence, but the
economy is extremely difficult. In a fluid political situation, it is very challenging for the economy to flourish
and grow, and if the economy is not improving, then
families will not have the means to send their children
to university. Also, what's going on in our neighborhood
in Syria and Iraq affects the ability of young people and
the students to pursue their degrees. One of the major
challenges is finding the financial aid that is necessary in
order to continue to provide the youth of Lebanon, and
