FROM THE EDITOR IN CHIEF
By Scott Cech

Onward
The promise of change is what drives us. It's what makes
us do what we do: make a difference, move the needle,
overcome obstacles, and accomplish objectives.
Too much change, however, and we find ourselves
swamped. Disoriented. Dispirited.
Amid all the policy and other changes that have flooded
into the international arena since the beginning of the year,
it seems only appropriate to assess the lay of the land-to
survey the challenges and opportunities that lay before us,
and to add some clarity about how best to move forward.
In addition to our cover story, "Lay of the Land: What
Now?," this edition offers timely features on the bold work
of higher education programs that serve refugees from
conflicts in Syria, Iraq, and elsewhere; the pioneering
partnerships institutions are forging in Cuba; and the
border-dissolving power of art therapy.
The issue also provides you with tools, tactics, and
practical insights that can help you in your day-to-day
work, including:
Education Abroad: EA leaders and experts share
proven strategies for boosting study abroad participation
among underrepresented U.S. student populations. (P. 52)
International Student Services: Leaders in the field
explode myths and outline best practices for educating
faculty and international students about varying academic
culture norms and preventing both misunderstandings and
misconduct. (P. 56)
Global Spotlight: An infographic snapshot that
quickly gets you up to date on the basics of Cuban higher
education as institutions in the United States and Cuba
begin to explore new ways to leverage knowledge and build
productive collaborations. (P. 9)
In fact, the undercurrent of change and new beginnings
that runs throughout the issue is doubly appropriate, as
this letter marks my running start as the editor in chief
of International Educator. As we continue to provide
you with both the inspiration and the solutions-oriented
information you rely on NAFSA for, I invite you to reach
out with your input on how we can make International
Educator serve you better: Please e-mail me directly at
