Community College and received bachelor's and master's degrees in social work from The University of Utah.
He's now working on a second master's degree, in city
and metropolitan planning, at The University of Utah.
The case management certificate is important,
Mohamed says, because "when you look at resettlement
agencies or social services, we lack the experienced
workers that speak the same language as those who are
coming." With this training, participants develop the
"tools to become the best caseworkers they can be.
"The better educated our society, the better decisions
we make as a society," Hunter says.

Training Teachers
Along with programs to aid adults, other institutions
work to assist younger refugees and their teachers.
Last year, for example, Teachers College at Columbia
University began a program to provide mentoring for
primary school teachers at the Kakuma refugee camp
in Kenya, which houses more than 190,000 refugees,
according to UNHCR. More than half the population
comes from South Sudan.

More than 90,000 school-age children and teens
live at the camp, and half are not in school. While the
enrollment rate in primary education is 70 percent, the
high school enrollment rate is just 2 percent, says Mary
Mendenhall, assistant professor of practice in international and comparative education at Teachers College.
Teachers at Kakuma are overwhelmed, with a teacherto-student rate of greater than 1 to 100, and less than onethird of the teachers have received training. Many of the
teachers are themselves refugees, and their only qualification for the job is that they graduated from high school.
Although the camp has existed for 20 years, support
for teachers has been limited, says Mendenhall, who
was driven to get involved after feeling "anger, disappointment, and a sense of responsibility to try to do
something to support the teachers against incredible
odds and challenges."
To help address the problems, Teachers College
teamed up with Finn Church Aid, a Finnish nongovernmental organization, to develop a plan to support
the teachers at the Kakuma refugee camp in a program
called Teachers for Teachers.
