The View from Abroad

ith all the policy and perception changes swirling around
international students who hope to study
in the United States, it's worth looking at
data from a survey published in October
2016, before the Obama administration
left office.
The 4,250 international students
surveyed in the report, Improving the
International Student Experience: Implications for Recruitment and Support, by
World Education Services, by and large
said they greatly enjoyed and benefited
from studying in the United States, but
noted that institutions of all types can and
should put more effort into making the
experience better. Other findings include:

Satisfaction rates overall were lofty (94
percent) with variations by home country
or region. European and Indian students
were most satisfied, followed by those
from sub-Saharan Africa and China.

While colleges of all stripes are eager
to enroll students funded by their countries, institutions should beef up English
instruction and other services "before
heavily recruiting from the Middle East
and North Africa."
n

Enrollment managers should work more
closely with academic departments and
support services. "Advising, financial aid,
career services, student life, housing, and
other student services need to be part of
the conversation, too," the report said.

For students who've come to the United States, often at considerable expense
and sacrifice, career services matter
greatly. "Career and work prospects are
huge motivators among . . . students
from all over the world."

Other findings of interest:

Satisfaction levels were nearly identical
for undergraduate and graduate students.
Only 3 percent felt that studying in the
United States was not a good investment.

A quarter expressed dissatisfaction
with the availability of financial aid and
nearly 1 in 10 felt research opportunities
were wanting. Three quarters gave a
thumbs up to their international student
and scholar services office.

Many students, especially those from
sub-Saharan Africa and China, regard the
U.S. higher education system as superior
to theirs.
To compete in the pursuit of globally
mobile students, institutions must take
the time to "understand what international students need to thrive across all
aspects of campus and academic life"
and pull together to meet those needs,
the report said.

Nearly two-thirds of students struggled
with the cost of education and living in
the United States. Sub-Saharan Africans
felt this the most.

Only 17 percent said cost was a top
factor in their choosing to study in the
United States. Twenty-nine percent said
aid and scholarships played a major role.
The availability of a desired program
was a top factor for most. An institution's
reputation was most important among
Chinese students.
English language proficiency was a
challenge for 1 in 4, especially Chinese
(48 percent), Middle Eastern and North
Africans (38 percent), and Latin American and Caribbean students (32 percent).

One in eight students was unhappy
with the number of opportunities to
network with faculty outside class.
n

Sixty percent of Chinese students
found it hard to make social connections;
two in five Indian students experienced
feeling lonely and homesick.
