are more likely to graduate, and according to the literature, this impact
is stronger the lower the GPA."
Through these efforts, she says, "[there] was a change in the
campus culture toward study abroad. More diverse students began
to study abroad, demonstrating the possibilities to their peers,
and a ripple effect began to take place." In fact, she says, UT rose
from number five nationwide in the number of underrepresented
students it sent abroad to number two.
At Butler, students contribute their study abroad stories to an
online page called Unpacked: A Study Abroad Guide for Students
Like Me. They offer perspectives for students who "are often
marginalized in study abroad participation, demonstrating peer
perspectives on overcoming challenges," McCullers says. "Their
stories cover a range of topics such as faith communities, family,
first-generation college students, money, race and ethnicity, [and]
students with special needs."

Trust
Finally, says Bruce, there's the issue of trust.
"One of the most elusive factors related to inspiring African
American collegians and other ethnic minorities to study abroad

is trust and credibility," Bruce says. "We expect first-generation,
low-income students to trust individuals and systems that generally do not take into consideration their unique identities or
realities."
Bruce works with a student organization primarily comprising
African American men. Together, they developed a short-term
summer study abroad program in the Dominican Republic whose
curriculum, location, cost, and duration were accessible to all
in the group. The program focuses on leadership, identity, and
diversity in a global context. Participants discuss what it means
to be American, what poverty looks like globally, the role African
American men play in global citizenship, and the historical
framework of modern slavery and mental colonization.
"Establishing authentic relationships with someone they can
trust is incredibly valuable in motivating students to pursue international learning experiences," Bruce says. "It doesn't mean that
the trustworthy person has to look like them, but it means that a
connection beyond a poster or brief information session needs to
be maintained." n
