"It is important to understand that
academic values and standards differ greatly
around the world."
Many universities offer first-year experience courses
to help new students acclimate to campus life. New international students at Brigham Young University (BYU) are
required to enroll in a class that's focused on helping them
adjust to U.S. culture and the educational system. The course
includes sessions on what constitutes plagiarism, how to
properly cite sources, and what resources are available on
campus to help students who are struggling. It also covers
potential consequences of getting suspended or expelled.
"Our discussions about plagiarism include some testimonials from students and readings about what the university's honor code means on our campus," says Sam Brown,
director of BYU's Office of International Student and Scholar
Services.
At the University of Richmond in Virginia, the Honor
Councils take the lead in educating all students about
academic integrity and the school's honor code. During the
summer before enrollment, all new students view a presentation and take a test created by the Honor Councils. Once
they arrive on campus, the information is reinforced at
orientation, when student members of the Honor Councils
lead small-group discussions about the honor code and policies related to academic honesty. The interactive sessions are

designed to help students visualize specific situations that
constitute violations of academic policies.
"Like any new concept, it's one thing to read about it in a
textbook manner, but then it's another thing to sort of have
a vivid experience and to see what that might look like in
the context of a student's academic daily life," says Krittika
Onsanit, director of international student and scholar
services at the University of Richmond. "We stress to our
student honor council members the importance of trying to
give examples to make it real for the students."

Forming Partnerships Across Campus
Incidents of cheating and plagiarism typically are reported
by faculty members, who may not be aware of the challenges
international students face in adapting to the U.S. classroom.
International student advisers can serve as advocates for
these students, promoting understanding among faculty
and academic advisers across campus about the hurdles
these students face. Brown offers workshops for faculty,
academic advisers, and other key players at BYU to explain
why international students may inadvertently engage in
academic misconduct and the consequences the students face
if reported. Professors often come to him when a student has
committed an offense, and he can inform them on a case-bycase basis what would happen if the behavior were reported to
the school's judicial board. But he never tells a faculty member
how to handle specific violations of the honor code, instead
leaving those decisions to their discretion.
"The more faculty and academic advisers can connect
with our staff in the Office of International Student and
Scholar Services, the better," Brown says. "I always love when
people contact me from across campus because it means
they care enough to reach out and to holistically consider
this student and not just this issue. So it's always nice to have
the network and connect so that faculty can have the full
picture when making decisions."
"We believe that through this outreach and education
piece, we can get advocates for the international students
who can step back from the situation and think, 'Okay,
what is your cultural issue here, or is this an impeachable
moment?'" Di Maria says.
Liz Matthews, assistant director of Michigan State
University's Office for International Students and Scholars,
says it's important for her counterparts at other institutions
to build "strong and trusting" working relationships with
the campus departments that deal with academic integrity
issues, such as the undergraduate dean's office and student

students-begin before they travel to the United States. The
university sends staff to these countries to lead orientation
workshops that include interactive sessions on academic
integrity. Students are led in role-playing exercises and smallgroup discussions about the issue in general and specifically
about the university's cultural expectations. International
students from other regions participate in webinars to learn
the same information. The information is repeated for all
students once they arrive on campus for orientation.
"International students come to our university with their
own values and cultures and assumptions," says Altamirano.
"They are used to their own academic practices, so before
they even travel to the U.S., we want to be proactive in dealing with the culture shock and academic adjustments. We
don't start with an approach of accusing them, however. We
start from the basics, explaining the concept of academic
integrity with the assumption that they aren't aware of these
issues."
