affairs. That will foster collaboration on specific cases
and provide the opportunity to brainstorm on ideas to
help mitigate future cases through improved training for
both students and faculty.
"One thing we want to do is avoid villainizing one
group over another," Matthews says. "I would caution
against the notion that it's only international students
who are cheating or that it's just students from a particular country. Could faculty have biases that international students cheat more and therefore are looking for
it? It's important as international student advisers to be
aware of the potential biases and advocate for equal and
fair treatment of international students."
International students rarely arrive in the United
States with a complete grasp of academic integrity,
experts say; it's the responsibility of host institutions to
expose them to the concept and provide training to help
these students ultimately succeed.
"It is important to educate international students

about academic integrity within the context of the
United States because the academic credentials they aim
to earn represent a form of cultural capital that not only
asserts the bearer has achieved a certain level of mastery
within a particular academic discipline, but they also
suggest the individual understands the norms of the
academy," Di Maria says. "This extends beyond basic
issues of cheating and plagiarism to issues of lab safety
and research protocol. This is incredibly important to
graduate schools, employers, and others who may later
wish to recruit these individuals based upon the credentials they hold. The value of an academic credential is
rooted in an assumption of quality, but that all falls apart
when integrity is in question. This not only has implications for the reputations of individual alumni, but also
for graduating institutions, accrediting bodies, and even
the entire U.S. higher education system." n
