INfocus

In my journey to Kenya through the Montana State University chapter of Engineers Without Borders, I have
been fortunate to be a part of a sustainable mission to implement water and sanitation projects at schools. I
participated thinking I was contributing to a Kenyan local community. Through reflection, I see that the people
of Khwisero have created sustained changes within myself that contributed to my own personal growth.
One day while a teammate and I were visiting a school, we were suddenly distracted by a boy wearing a
unique hat and holding an instrument. I inquired about his attire to a teacher and she quickly beckoned him
over to play for us, explaining that this student was practicing for a music competition. The instrument was a
traditional eight-string guitar, and the cowhide hat was customarily worn during performances. We stopped
working and took time to learn a little about Kenya's musical heritage from the students, who by then had
crowded around us.
My time in Kenya included many small moments like this, moments that when isolated might seem trivial,
but together installed a new knowledge within me about the importance of slowing down, asking questions,
and valuing human connection. In conclusion, I went to Kenya with the idea that I would change lives with
wells and latrines, but it was me who was changed every time someone paused to share their passions and
stories with me. n
