Carrying Globally
NAFSA is collaborating with IELTS to
bring custom fair-trade conference
tote bags to the NAFSA 2017 Annual
Conference in Los Angeles. The new bag
is produced by Township®, a network of
six autonomous cooperatives supporting
women entrepreneurs in Cape Town,
South Africa, since 1997. The new bag
is ecofriendly, reusable, and durable.
Township is a member of the World Fair
Trade Organization.
Ariel Foster, executive director/CEO at
IELTS USA, said, "Respecting the source
of materials and the individuals who
create the goods we use and consume
is increasingly important. IELTS is proud
to support Township and the people
who created this bag for our use at the
conference-and beyond."
NAFSA gratefully acknowledges IELTS
for its partnership.

TOWNSHIP

Russia is attracting more international students as the declining
value of the ruble makes tuition there more affordable, according
to Russia Beyond the Headlines, a publication affiliated with
Rossiyskaya Gazeta, a newspaper owned by the Russian
government. Citing data from the Russian Presidential Academy
of National Economy and Public Administration (RANEPA), it said
the number of foreign students nearly tripled, from 100,900 in
2005 to 282,900 in 2015, with revenues rising from $356 million
to almost $1.5 billion. The Institute of International Education's
Project Atlas shows that most foreign students in Russia hail
from former Soviet states, which account for seven of the top 10
countries of origin. A quarter are from Kazakhstan. China is fourth
on the list with 20,200 students, and India and Vietnam together
send about 10,500. Sagging oil prices and economic sanctions
have both hurt the Russian economy.
Meanwhile, the ICEF Monitor, citing UNESCO figures,
reported that 66,623 Kazakhstani students were enrolled
abroad in 2015, an increase of nearly 140 percent since 2006.
Some 2,000 Kazaks were enrolled in U.S. institutions.
