What
Happens to
Study Abroad
Students?

The Entertainment World
Plenty of famous actors, singers, and others in the entertainment world studied abroad.
Bradley Cooper spent six months as an exchange
student in the Aix-en-Provence region of France.
Today, he gives interviews strictly in French when he
travels to France.
Natalie Portman was born
in Jerusalem, and returned
there to take graduate courses
at the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem in 2004. Today, she
is both bilingual (in English
and Hebrew) and a dual citizen
of the United States and Israel.
Jim Croce, the late singersongwriter, was selected in
1964 for a student exchange
program that sent four
American folk singers to Turkey, Yugoslavia,
Lebanon, Tunisia, Nigeria, and other countries in
Africa, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe.
The late film critic Roger Ebert was a Rotary
ambassador scholar, and went to the University
of Cape Town in South Africa in 1965 to study
English Literature. While there, he was influenced by the experience and the culture, as well
as the tumultuous nature of the society. He later
said that this experience greatly affected him and
his world view.

Writers, Artists,
and Journalists
Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., an
author and physician, was one of
the first Americans to study at
the École de Médecine in Paris.
"Paris was known for its strength
in medical training at the time,
and many American physicians
studied there and brought the practices back to the U.S.,"
McNitt writes. "All study at the École de Médecine was
conducted in French, so he had to engage a
tutor to keep up. He wrote to his father saying,
'I love to talk French, to eat French, to drink
French every now and then.' "
African American painter Aaron Douglas
studied abroad in Paris at the Academie
Scandinave in the 1930s after he graduated
from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in
1922. He's well-known for his major contributions to the Harlem Renaissance and his painting techniques echo his studies in France.
