Saudi Enrollments in
United States Drop

UK Universities
Worry About Brexit
The number of students enrolled in higher
education institutions across the United
Kingdom (UK) rose 1 percent in 2015-16 to nearly
2.3 million, the Higher Education Statistics Agency
reported. Six percent of that total came from other
European Union countries and 14 percent from
outside Europe. The number from other EU countries
rose 2 percent from 2014-15 but university leaders
now are deeply worried that many EU students will
look elsewhere after the United Kingdom exits the
European Union. A parliamentary committee took
testimony at Oxford University and University College
London (UCL) to hear those concerns. Applications to
UK universities from EU students by the mid-January
deadline for the next academic year were down 7.4
percent, Michael Arthur, president and provost of
UCL, testified. (They were also down 5 percent among
domestic UK students.) Applications to UCL were
stronger, but Arthur nonetheless invoked his institution's slogan to add, "'London's Global University'
doesn't look so good if it says, 'London's Global
University-minus Europe'.... We will miss those
students hugely." Nicola Dandridge, chief executive
of Universities UK, said, "Vice chancellors across the
country are concerned about the EU numbers." The
European countries that send the most students to the
United Kingdom currently are: Germany, France, Italy,
Ireland, Greece, Cyprus, Spain, Romania, Bulgaria,
and Poland. Over the past five years, the UK institutions saw a 4 percent drop in enrollments from Ireland
and the continental Europe. China sends more students than any other country (91,000), while Malaysia,
the United States, India, Hong Kong, and Nigeria send
roughly 16,000-17,000 each. Enrollment of students
from India fell sharply over the five years.

The number of students from Saudi Arabia in the United
States on visas plummeted nearly 20 percent in the 12
months ending November 2016, according to the latest U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)
quarterly report on the Student and Exchange Visitor
Program (SEVP). That was by far the biggest drop among
the major sending countries. The numbers from India rose
14.1 percent and China increased 5.2 percent, while South
Korea dropped 8.3 percent. Vietnam rose 4.5 percent and
Japan slipped 2.5 percent. Nearly 60,000 Saudi students
attended U.S. postsecondary institutions last year, making
Saudi Arabia the third largest sender after China and India.
The overall number of F and M international students,
J-1 exchange visitors, and their dependents with active
SEVIS records increased 1.9 percent to 1,583,665 in those
12 months, ICE reported. The report is available online

Australia International
Enrollments Surge
Australia's education exports climbed to more than U.S.
$16 billion in 2016, according to the Australian Bureau of
Statistics. That marked a 17 percent jump over how much
international students brought into Australia's economy in
2015. "There is strong global demand for Australian education and training and we are helping Australian providers
to pursue opportunities," Australian Minister for Trade,
Tourism and Investment Steven Ciobo said. International
education supports more than 130,000 jobs in the country, or 1.3 percent of all jobs in the country, officials said.
Australia's 10-year National Strategy for International
Education projects that international enrollments will grow
45 percent by 2025, which equates to hosting 720,000 students. In 2015 it enrolled 498,155 students, making it the
third largest market after the United States and the United
Kingdom. By comparison, the 1,043,839 international
students who studied at U.S. colleges and universities in
2015-16 contributed $32.8 billion to the U.S. economy and
supported more than 400,000 jobs, according to NAFSA's
latest analysis.
