sponsored by existing groups of social entrepreneurs like
Ashoka, and many colleges and universities created their
own centers focused on social entrepreneurship.
At first, the focus was on shining the spotlight on
individuals with innovative ideas-the so-called "heropreneurs." That's what authors David Bornstein and
Susan Davis famously called "social entrepreneurship
1.0." As the field evolved, greater efforts were focused
on ensuring that these innovative ideas resulted in
sustainable, well-organized businesses: social entrepreneurship 2.0.
At the same time, there was a growing chorus of
voices both inside and outside the academy saying that
these projects were operating in vacuums. Too often, critics said, social entrepreneurship focused excessively on
entrepreneurship-creating business plans and executing on them, often at the expense of understanding local
contexts or the other players, including governments and
nongovernmental organizations, philanthropists, other
changemakers, and even business competitors.
At the same time, many students intrigued by the
idea of global changemaking couldn't find the right business idea-one that both appealed to them personally
and could lead to a viable business in a farflung corner of
the globe. "Most students with great promise as agents
of social change may not be ready or willing to lead a
project," says Isham. However, these students could easily
become "an intrapreneur in an existing company or see
entrepreneurship as a long-term career goal," Raible says.

Evolving into Cooperation
Hence the new focus on what Bornstein and Davis call
social entrepreneurship 3.0-a focus on changemaking

"We're probably at a place where social
entrepreneurship in the academy is going through
another phase of transformation."
across entire sectors, and working within the system
instead of trying to transform it. For colleges and universities, that change has resulted in rethinking how to best
prepare students for this evolving idea of social change.
"We're probably at a place where social entrepreneurship in the academy is going through another phase
of transformation," Isham says.
Colleges and universities deeply involved in social
entrepreneurship have recognized the broader shift
driving changemakers. "A lot of the evolution has
involved the pendulum [swinging] between encouraging innovation and entrepreneurship and, on the other
end, deeply culturally competent problem-solving," says
Kingsley. "We've come such a long way."
Social entrepreneurs often point to a famous quote
from Andrew Carnegie, who knew a thing or two about
building new businesses. To be successful, Carnegie
said, entrepreneurs must be willing to endure "the
humbling eclipse of self" that comes from "profound
learning from others."
"Social entrepreneurship acts like a Trojan horse-
students hear the term and think it's great," Isham says.
"But pretty soon, they're asking deep questions about
the kind of lives they want to lead." n
