Making the Case: Why Study Abroad is So Crucial

A

s the nation debates what
skills and knowledge are
needed to prepare tomorrow's
workforce, the need for greater
global competencies, intercultural skills, critical thinking, and
language skills has become more
apparent. Ensuring that many more
American college students have
access to study abroad as part of
their academic preparation is vital
to U.S. competitiveness and should
be a national priority. Facts to keep
in mind include:
Study abroad is good for students,
leading to higher graduation
rates, higher GPAs, and greater
employability:
n■ Four-year graduation rates are 18
percent higher for those who study
abroad.
n■ Studying abroad has been

shown to increase a student's grade
point average.
n■ 75 percent of companies surveyed
said study abroad is important for
management and entry-level staff.
Study abroad is good for the
nation:
n■ 23 million jobs in the United
States are tied to international trade.
n■ 80 percent of companies surveyed believe business would
increase if staff had more international experience.
Americans support study abroad:

n■ 90 percent of voters agree that

our nation needs an education
system that produces educators,
business leaders, and diplomats
who understand other cultures
and languages.
n■ 83 percent of voters agree that

our nation is better off when more
of our students are internationally
educated and understand other
cultures and languages.
n■ 75 percent of voters agree that
studying abroad, learning other
languages, and learning about
other cultures are essential to the
American educational experience.
Bipartisan legislation is now
pending in Congress that would
ensure that students graduate
with study abroad experience that
prepares them for tomorrow's
workforce. The Senator Paul Simon
Study Abroad Program Act, which
NAFSA and a broad coalition of
partners endorse, would help to
address the challenge of preparing
global-ready citizens.

Tackling the Big ISSS Challenges,
One Relationship at a Time

O

f all the challenges that international student and scholar services (ISSS) professionals must master
every day, the most difficult may be
balancing the duality of their responsibilities. On the one hand, they must
be well versed in the minutia of compliance at a time when federal policies

and rules are in dramatic flux. Just this
year, there have been an enormous
number of regulatory changes that
affect and directly impact international students and scholars.
On the other hand, the job of
comprehensively helping those
students and scholars requires ISSS

practitioners to simultaneously do
the opposite of burying themselves
in the micro-universe of regulatory
arcana: They must get out and build
a wide network of relationships on
their campus and in their community that can help support the success of students and scholars. That
