includes getting to know the campus and city police, residence life
staff, dining hall staff, the counseling
center, the student health staff, and
the professionals in the dean's office.
It can also mean reaching out within
the local community's faith communities, getting to know apartment
complex managers, and even making contact with local banks.
Such extensive networking might
seem far outside ISSS practitioners' radius of responsibility, but it
ultimately saves them time in the
long run. Those relationships create
a friendlier campus-students tend

to feel more comfortable and less
isolated, and they can concentrate
on being academically successful.
That helps them stay on track to
complete their degrees, and they
are more likely to say positive things
about the institution, the city, and
the state upon graduation.
Of course, creating that network
across campus and the community
takes time, and when you have a pile
of paperwork and a line of students
out the door needing to see you,
you have to attend to the urgent
needs. But those lines tend to be a
lot shorter when student questions

about living situations, potential cultural issues, and safety concerns can
be nipped in the bud by members of
an ISSS practitioner's network.
The important skill for the ISSS
professional to learn is how to manage resources so you can keep your
organization compliant while at the
same time building out an interconnected matrix of professionals and
allies on and off campus who can
help identify and address potential
difficulties before they become real
problems.
