India Struggles to Attract International Students
INDIAN UNIVERSITIES are significantly underperforming in their attempts to recruit international
students, according to Internationalisation of Higher
Education in India: Annual Survey of International
Students in India 2014-15, a recent report from the
Association of Indian Universities. Although India has
seen a significant increase in the overall number of
international students-from 7,791 in 2000 to 30,423 in
2014-that total falls far short of the 4.85 million international students that Indian law permits.

Authors of the report say the yawning gap emphasizes the unfulfilled potential of the country's higher
education system. Possible deterrents to potential international student enrollment cited in the report, which
includes feedback from Indian university administrators, include difficulty in obtaining visas, problems getting acceptance of educational qualifications at Indian
universities, and a lack of sufficient housing accommodation for international students.

Shorter Education Abroad Opportunities
May Close Student Mobility Gaps
UNIVERSITIES that want to make progress on closing the mobility gap in their student populations should
offer opportunities for shorter study abroad programs,
according to a recent report produced by Universities
UK International in partnership with the European
Union's Erasmus+ program.
According to the report, Widening Participation in
UK Outward Student Mobility: A picture of participation, the length of available study abroad experiences
is a common reason that students from minority or
disadvantaged backgrounds cite for not studying abroad.

These students often face increased financial pressures-such as needing to maintain a job or course of
study that doesn't allow them to be out of the country
for months-that students from populations with higher
mobility rates don't.
The report comes as the 48 member states of the
European Higher Education Area work toward their
agreed goal of having 20 percent or more of European
students participate in a study abroad experience during
their time at university.
