Bao Lei, Chinese-American Higher
Education Institute
As an undergraduate student at the University of Bridgeport (UB),
Bao Lei drew international attention-and a prestigious award
from the Chinese government-for her business plan to brand tea
from her native country and sell it in the United States. But it was
her experience as president of the Chinese Students and Scholars
Association at UB that would ultimately drive her career trajectory.
As leader of the student group, Lei planned campus events like
a Chinese New Year gala and networked with the leaders of similar organizations at campuses across the country. She learned that
many international students had struggled with applying to U.S.
colleges, adjusting to life on campus, conducting job searches, and
keeping current with visa issues.
"I helped a lot of students, especially Chinese students, acclimate to U.S. college life, spread their culture, and get to know
career information," Lei says. Meanwhile, winning the Chinese
government-sponsored Chunhui Cup-a competitive innovation and entrepreneurship award for overseas students-with her
business plan for branding tea connected her with officials from
that nation's department of education. In 2016 she was named an
entrepreneur adviser for China's consulate general in New York.
"I met lots of students who wanted to start businesses between
the U.S. and China," Lei says. "That made me want to use my
resources to help them."
Ultimately deciding to earn an MBA from the University of
Bridgeport, Lei found herself at the Student Entrepreneur
Center. Unlike others in the
program, she was focused

on starting a nonprofit organization, which would become the
Chinese-American Higher Education Institute (CAHEI).
Lei has worked to develop a software platform to match
Chinese students with colleges and universities. Called Xingzhi,
the platform uses data modeling, algorithms, and machine learning to analyze information provided by students and make recommendations. Still in beta testing, the platform analyzes not only
hard data like a student's GPA and TOEFL scores, but also the
text of résumés and recommendation letters to glean information
about their interests and aptitudes, according to Lei. For students
who have a specific institution in mind, Xingzhi will analyze their
data to make an estimate of the probability they will be accepted.
Lei is seeking information from more students to make the platform and its algorithms more accurate, she says.
Xingzhi, which has already attracted more than 11,000 student
members, also offers articles, social networking, and information
about educational exchange opportunities. Free to students, the
platform has drawn attention from secondary schools in China,
including the Beijing Royal School, which plans to share student
data from the 300 to 400 students planning to study in the United
States each year, according to Lei.
Lei's company also uses the platform to promote content
from participating U.S. colleges and universities, including the
University of Bridgeport. As with international agents, CAHEI
is reimbursed when students apply and enroll at participating
schools, but Lei points out a key difference.
